Eva makes a good point about the type of activity done on vacation. If you are into serious fun...sailing, scuba, climbing etc (anything that can get damaged, broken, lost or YOUR fingers cut off) you may consider leaving the jewels home (or better yet..in the safe box!). Average sun, snorkling, sightseeing...wear em and be proud, no matter the size.

Eva raises a good point. One of my friends' moms got her wedding band stuck on an anchor as she was throwing it overboard the boat. You can imagine what happened next. I guess if I anticipated that I would be engaging in some sporting activity (either while traveling or at home), I might leave the jewelry at home in our safe box. Most of my travel involves alot of either business travel or laying by the pool/beach with a cocktail so little worry there.<BR><BR>I guess I am like Ang - I live in Chicago and work downtown where I wear my jewelry everyday and it does not even enter my mind to take it off when I travel (I do take it off to garden but that's about it). All of my good jewelry is insured at appraisal value, as is my husband's watch, and my rings are not particularly flashy.

Wow, lots of responses suddenly! I actually haven't gotten my ring insured yet (only been married for almost a year) so that is another issue that concerns me. I know, I know, I need to get it insured! I still think I would feel better about leaving it at home though. At least we have an alarm and if we were robbed while gone some of it would be insured.

Grace, if it's not insured and it is stolen from your home, you are out of luck. I always take my rings, diamond studs and good watch with me. I've never been worried wearing them anywhere in the world. I never worry about being mugged. I figure I have a greater chance of my home being broken into.<BR><BR>My home was robbed once and they stole all the jewelry that I wasn't wearing. I feel much more comfortable having it with me.

I usually consider the place we're going before I leave my ring at home. In central America and eastern Europe, I don't feel comfortable wearing something so expensive around the locals who could never afford something like it. And there are some people in those locations desperate enough to rob me for even the costume version. But in major European cities and countryside, I certainly feel as comfortable as I do sporting it around DC.

grace,<BR>please put it in the safe box at the bank where you hold an account! way too many peoples' homes have been robbed while on vacation looking for exactly that, the jewlery you choose not to take. aside from the insurance and money, dont take a chance with such a precious item. you obvisouly were concerned enough about it to post this great question. one last thing...enjoy your trip to mexico!

Our homeowner's insurance (State Farm) is the same as "My two cents" posted above - jewelry is only insured up to $1000 unless you have a separate policy or rider to specifically cover the item. You need the receipt or an appraisal for the insurance company. If you have a computer, you should also check your renter's or homeowner's insurance coverage. Some companies also place limitations on coverage for computers.<BR>

If you have your ring insured, it doesn't matter if it is stolen at home or away. The idea of a floater on your policy means just that, the object floats from place to place and is covered anywhere.

I think Karen Kt's a real gas (bag). You can't take any of hert crap seriously because she probably sits there in her ratty robe and types a fantasy life. She's going to the club, then take her class in something or other, then getting the snotty dog at the groomer. She is hilarious, but obviously demented. She no doubt sits home all day doing stuff her husband tell her to do. Never travels, that's for sure. Strictly her hubby's little wifey.

I meant that at least by leaving it at home it would be insured for a small amount, if it was lost or stolen on vacation I would get absolutly nothing for it. I think I like Amy's suggestion about the Safe Deposit Box at my bank, I will look into that. And Thankyou Amy, I cant wait to go on my trip!!!

LOL Nina, that is an even better way to think of it! Course we are staying at an All-inclusive so I don't know how gracious I would be! LOL. I left my Oh-so-faux 2 carat (total) diamond studs on the night stand at SoHo Grand. Called the next day and they had been turned in and were Fed Ex'd to me the next day. I suppose I should have mailed a tip for the maid who turned them in. I wonder if she knew they were fake! Hey, Maybe it was Karen!!!!
