Jet ski in San Diego

I remember seeing a lake(?) with jet skiiers on the east side of 405 Freeway around Del Mar or La Jolla. Does anyone have info? Any other place to jet ski in San Diego area?

Thanks.

The 405 connects back to the 5 freeway much earlier, so I think you are asking about lagoons off the 5. My best guess for what you saw is San Elijo Lagoon or Batiquitos Lagoon. Both areas are wetland habitat, so I'm pretty sure you can't jet ski there. Mission Bay in San Diego is very popular with jet skiiers and you can rent them right there. I've seen a some jet skis in San Diego Bay as well.

The only "lake" on the east side of I-5 near Del Mar and la Jolla wuld be Los Penasquitos Lagoon and you can't jet ski, swim, boat or anything there.

I think Jen253 is correct with her guess and I believe I've seen jet skiers there. However, the big jet ski area is Mission Bay. Be aware that the Harbor Police are being very vigilant for drunk boaters, including those using jet skis. Same penalties as drunk driving.

I think there IS an area when you are traveling north on the 5 that you can rent jet skis from. I have pictures of my dh there prior to me meeting him - but that is going back 12 years... I recall seeing the sign though.
I would go with Mission Bay was well - as long as it is swimmable.

Sorry I do mean 5, not 405. Did some googling of the above-mentioned lagoons and learned a little geology of this interesting area. We'll look into Mission Bay area for jet ski. Wonder how HP determine whether a jet skiier is drunk or not???

Same way they do for drunk driving.

we rented a boat last September on Mission Bay to tow the kids on a round raft meant for the bay only. Never been so nervous in my entire life...tons of boats on the bay, everyone driving way too fast and I'll never do it again. Even my son, age 20, hated the experience and said it wasn't worth it.
Jet skiing might be less dangerous since you are more visable, but I'd try it mid week rather than the busy weekend.

hmmmm...I was also wondering about the "boat traffic" in the bay. Thanks for your input. I'll defintely have to look into that situation because we are not avid jet skiiers. My 15-yr-old daughter had her first jet ski experience on a lagoon in Acapulco where we are virtually alone so it was so much fun. Now if we have to share the water with all the other boats, that we may have to reconsider.

Even 20 years ago when we lived in the area, Mission Bay was pretty chaotic. We generally made the 4 hour trek out to the Colorado River for water skiing weekends. Back in those days, one of the lagoons up near Carlsbad wasn't completely off limits to power boats, not sure if that would be the case anymore. There might be some areas in San Diego bay, past the navy docks. Lake Elsinore would be another possibility, but it is quite a distance.

if she is 15 I would def. reconsider....like I said, my son is a junior in college and he said he felt like everytime he fell off the raft someone was going to run him over and this was a SUNDAY morning! Of course, with a jet ski, you are not as "exposed."
Take her shopping in Mission Valley or Horton Plaza, sightseeing at Sea World or the zoo. Much safer and cheaper! Have fun..SD is a great town for young and old.

There is a lagoon where you and ski on the east side of I-5 in Carlsbad, which is north of Del Mar.

ice_leopard Jun 10th, 2007 06:14 PM

dgassa--do you know which exit to the lagoon? any jet ski rental available there?

Barbara Jun 10th, 2007 06:38 PM

I think the exit is Tamarack Avenue. Then you'd go east.

Barbara, I think that's what I'm looking for. I made a phone call and find out they do operate water sports on the lagoon. Thanks for the info.
