Jersey City Parking
 

We will be visiting NYC over the Memorial Day weekend and have opted to stay at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City. We typically stay in the city, but we (three middle aged couples) decided to try something different and the views of NYC from the hotel look beautiful. My question is concerning parking. The parking at the hotel is $32.00 a day. When we stay in the city, we park at Newark Airport and take transportation in. We may have to do that this time also...park at the airport and take a cab or shuttle. Does anyone know if there are surface lots somewhere close to the hotel that would be cheaper than $32.00 daily? Thanks.

There are 200 free parking spots at the Newark Amtrak station (Market St. not the airport). Are you coming back to Jersey City after your day in NYC?

Thanks for the info. Yes, we will be spending two days in NYC, but coming back to Jersey City for the night.

Side note -- how are you getting back and forth? Aren't the Path trains not running on weekends?

Yikes! I did not know that. I checked all the reviews and they talk about the ease of getting to the city by the PATH or the light rail or water taxi. I did not think the weekends may be different. I will have to check into that. I think we are just going to bite the bullet and pay for the $32.00 parking at the hotel. I thought perhaps Jersey City had parking lots around the hotel that might be someone cheaper.

bc, I hope I didn't give you a false alarm. We had dinner in the city on a weekend recently with a friend who lives in Jersey City. He's the one who said the PATH is closed for at least this summeer on all weekends. He was doing some convoluted trip with a taxi, then a ferry, then a bus to get home. Check it out. Maybe the Hyatt can tell you more specifically alternatives for traveling back and forth.

And let us know how it is. I keep thinking we'll stay at that Hyatt sometime, but oddly every time we get serious there seems to be an event and their prices go sky high. When we're not really looking, I see great rates there! GRRRR.

Oh, I also found this for parking -- it's either $16 a day or maybe $12 day on weekends. A few blocks away from Exchange Place. Worth a call to confirm.

I took it last weekend between Hoboken and 33rd, but just checked the PATH site and found that service is suspended between Jersey City and the WTC (downtown) station. It will still run from Journal Square to midtown via Hoboken. Second link has a map.

Ah, that's it. But how does one get from the Hyatt (which practically sits on the Exchange Place Path Station now closed on weekends) to Journal Square or elsewhere then? To someone unfamiliar with the logistics, neither of those links is much help.

Or maybe I should have asked how one gets from Exchange place to either Grove Street or Newport station to get PATH (not Journal Square) -- or is there another way not too involved to get from the Hyatt to Manhattan?

It looks like you'd have to make your way to Grove Street. I don't know how far that is or how safe it might be to walk -- parts of Jersey City are still very iffy. The hotels must be furious.

You can walk from Exchange Place to Grove Street. It's not that far ... I can't remember exactly but not more than 10 blocks. But it's inconvenient, and I probably would not do that walk at night.

Another option would be to take the Light Rail to Hoboken and then take the PATH in from there, but that's obviously more expensive and more inconvenient.

And there are ferries, but I'm not sure the ferries from Exchange Place run on weekends. That means you'd still have to go to Hoboken on the Light Rail. And ferries are expensive ($10 per ride).

Wow...thanks for all the helpful info. NeoPatrick, yes, those stops are closed on weekends during 2014. Of course...we did not know that when we booked in 2013. We use Tripadvisor for hotels and all of the reviews talk about how easy it is to get to Manhattan. We have always stayed in the city because we did not want the hassle of getting back to the hotel, but this seemed so easy, and with the beautiful view and the (for New York) good price, we thought we would try it. We did call the hotel. They have a shuttle on weekends that will take us to the closest open stop (yes, I believe they said Grove Street). Of course, that is not quite the ease we hoped for but it will take more than that to spoil a trip to NYC for us. We can take the water taxi, but their last run is at 9:50 PM, so we would need to take the train back. Doug, the ferry is running on weekends during this time and the fare is only $2.50 per ride. I imagine that is to help out during the PATH closing issue. NeoPatrick, thank you also for the info on the parking. We will look into that...that seems exactly what I was looking (and hoping) for. I will post info on the hotel after our trip.

Thanks for the heads up on the cheap ferry, bc. That does make it more enticing, and it's a great ride. If you can do it, I'd recommend at least one trip that way.

A couple suggestions.....the Newport area of Jersey City is very nice these days! There are lots of parking options away from the Hyatt and they should be walkable. I pass one on Marin Blvd and Columbus that's $11/day. Are you committed to the Hyatt? The Westin is very close to the Newport PATH and Light rail and the parking garage is a little cheaper ($22/day). The views may not be as nice, however...
