Jemez Springs - worth the drive?
DH likes the idea of taking a soak at one of the springs in Jemez Springs. I've seen the bathhouse recommendation in a few different publications. Has anyone done the soak at the bathhouse in Jemez Springs? Interested in your experience.

Suzie,
Are you talking about Jemez Springs in N Mexico? If so, it was a highlight of our trip a few years ago. We were coming from Chaco Canyon and spent a night at a lovely B&B in Jemez Springs called Canon del Rio. Very inexpensive and a gorgeous setting. The town is small with only a few galleries and dining options but surrounded by beautiful scenery. We hiked into an amazing hot spring located in the middle of nowhere - an incredible place. Really enjoyed it! http://www.pbase.com/peterb/image/50426433 http://www.pbase.com/peterb/image/50427864 |
that's a great spot sharondi - bookmarking for a future visit.
we went to ojo caliente (close-ish to jemez) www.ojocalientesprings.com |
We made a day trip from Santa Fe to see the ruins at Jemez Springs. We didn't check out the springs. It was a long, but very scenic, drive from Santa Fe. I don't think i'd do it again.
By contrast, I'd definitely do the LONG drive to Chaco Canyon from Santa Fe. That was breath taking. |
Sharondi, the spring looks so inviting. How long of a walk/hike was it? DH just had eye surgery and has to limit certain physical activites. If it is an easy walk, no problem. If it is a strenuous hike, then it is a no go.
I'm still curious about the bathhouse in town. Has anyone been there? |
Suzie,
Not familiar with the bathhouse in town. The hike in to the hotsprings was not long but was uphill most of the way - I think it was about 2 1/2 miles one way. There are others in the area but I'm unsure of how difficult they are to get to. Maria, You guys would love this spot! Nice hike in and the hot springs are located in an alpine meadow - really gorgeous. There are several pools all along the creek and nice camp sites near the springs. Luckily no one was around the day we were there. |
sharon, beautiful pictures! How was the heat at McCauley? We were concerned because it was pretty cool when we went so we didn't go to those. I'll see if I can post a link to mine.
I visited the bathhouse but did not soak there. Actually, I waited about 15 minutes and no one ever came to help us. I was going to see about getting a massage. I prefer hot springs that are out in nature. We visited Spence Hot Springs 3 or 4 times. We also went to Giggling hot springs once when we got back from hiking too late to go to Spence. It was fine; at least it was outdoors. |
