Jekyll Island without car?

Never been to JI.
We've got the chance to fly into Jekyll Island's airstrip and spend a day/night seeing the historic buildings and walking on the beach. It's a busy weekend, but the Quality Inn & Suites has some rooms open (also Holiday Inn and some Villas on the north end).

I think it is 1-1.5 miles from airstrip to historic area. Then 3.5 miles across island to motels? Does that sound right?

Has anyone stayed on JI and just used bicycles or local taxis in addition to walking to get around?

No, but the short time you are going to be there, it shouldn't be a problem depending on where you stay.

Yes, bikes will get you everywhere. We camped there years ago and the car never left its spot...we rode our bikes all over. Enjoy!

We spent just a night there arriving about noon and leaving the next day at noon. Although we were driving, we also didn't use the car, but rented bikes from the hotel -- the Jekyll Inn (?) which was then a Radisson?

Thanks for the help.

Most of the hotels are full, so we can only stay where rooms are available-- the Quality Inn & Suites or Holiday Inn over on the oceanside or the Villas up on north end of island where beach has eroded (does that make sense?).

I will phone Quality Inn to see how to get to the hotel from airstrip, then rent bikes to get back to the historic district and around the island.

Kay2, while you are there stop in Barbara Jean's for crabcakes. And, yes, you will be fine without a car. Enjoy your stay. It is a lovely place.
