Jazz in New Orleans

We are planning to visit New Orleans in December and would like to spend an evening listening to soft jazz. Any suggestions and would we need reservations ?

Dennis,

I visited NO in October and found that the best Jazz clubs are located well away from the Bourbon Street chaos. My favorite was Snug Harbor which was a nice, classy, intimate venue with some real quality acts. The Funky Butt was another "interesting" spot, but use a cab or choose your walking route carefully as it is not on the safest of streets. Really depends on who is playing where on a particular night so grab a good hotel concierge and go down the list with them. Enjoy!

Scott, Snug Harbor sounds interesting. Can you give me an idea where it and Funky Butt are located, and dress codes for each? Thanks.

Hi, Dennis. I agree with the suggestions about Snug Harbor and Funky Butt. Snug Harbor is in Marigny at 626 Frenchmen Street - very close to the Quarter. Funky Butt is at 714 N. Rampart. I've never seen it open before 8 or 9 at night. I'd also recommend Preservation Hall at 726 St. Peter. It's basically on Bourbon Street and it's always crowded, but it's a great experience that you'll never find any place else. You may also try Donna's which is at 800 N. Rampart, 1/2 block from Funky Butt. Covers vary at these places depending on who's on the stage that night - except for Preservation Hall - I think it's always $4. Dress is casual at all these places. Have a great trip.

Dennis --

Definitely go to Preservation Hall, but get in line early (before 7:30 on a weekend night; the doors open at 8) or you'll have to stand -- you might even miss the first set. The price is now $5, but still a bargain.
