Kathleen,
My husband & I loved Snug Harbor - it's
a nice club to see fine jazz performances. Tickets can be reserved in advance - usually two sets per night
(9 & 10:30pm? It does get crowded so reserve ahead, get there early for a good table up close (nice balcony seats
along the rail). We also had a great
time at Preservation Hall (just be prepared for squeezing in & the possibility of sitting on the floor or standing if you're not quick enough to snag one of the few wooden benches). Just afew blocks away on Bourbon Street is The Storyville District Jazz club, which begins sets around 7;30 pm - no cover, just required food or beverage purchase during the show. They have a nice stage, a range in quality of performers & sometimes dancing if the band and audience click. We wanted to
go to Donna's up near Rampart (cab would be the way to get there & back), but the brass band selections during our stay were not the ones we had hoped to hear. If we had had more time the Maple Leaf (jazz) uptown in Oak St. area and the Mid City Lanes Rock & Bowl on Carrollton Ave (for Zydeco)would have been our next must see clubs. I loved the afternoon street performances on Royal St and Bourbon St by canal that we often bumped into - what a great music town NO is ... even the street performers outshine what I could pay to see in clubs up north!!!
