Jan. Austin, TX Getaway

My boyfriend and I will be in Austin from January 4-7. We are both vegetarians and plan on eating at Mr. Natural, Mother's Cafe and Garden, and Nu Age Cafe. Any other suggestions?

Since this is a last minute vacation, we're just going to priceline the lodging. We will be driving up (from New Orleans) so we will have a car. We're both mid twenties, so any tips on Austin after hours and cool sites around town are greatly appreciated.

Also, we're thinking about doing some vintage/thrift shopping while we're in town. Again, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Danielle,

I have made lots of recommendations on this forum for Austin so just click on my name and you'll bring up the previous posts. After that, come back and ask me more questions if you have them. I'm happy to help!!

As for vintage and thrift stores, definitely do not miss South Congress. Just walk up and down the street and you'll run into a bunch of shops like you're looking for. South Congress starts when you cross the Congress Street Bridge from downtown over Town Lake.

Good thrift stores can be found along Burnet Road starting at W. 49th Street and going north. There's a really good one right on the corner of 49th and Burnet. I would start there and then ask them for exact locations of the other ones in the neighborhood.

I wouldn't worry too much about being vegetarian cause just about every place will offer vegetarian courses (except the BBQ places!). You might enjoy Wheatsville Food Coop on Guadalupe. They have a cafe which would be a great place for lunch. And Central Market on N. Lamar has a great cafe too and tons of prepared foods if you want to grab a quick bite.

Wheatsville is great -- love to just go in there and browse!

Are you Vegan? If you are Lacto-Ovo vegitarians, I would reccomend the following:
South Congress Cafe
Maria's Taco Xpress
Kerbey Lane
South Congress may have Vegan choices, but I'm not sure. The huge whole foods should have options for you, and there are places/ tables to eat there.

I forbid you to miss Whole Foods at 525 N. Lamar, it's like nothing you've ever seen before. It's a vegetarian's heaven, but good for those who eat meat as well. Please check it out.

Jo's on S Congress has a wheat-meat bbq sandwich and a no-egg salad sandwich.
