Jan 07 Trip
My husband and I are travelling from Aus to Portland to visit family .
Whilst there we would like to do either Victoria B.C and Seattle, or go south to Carmel and Monterey.We will not be driving but would love some suggestions for a 12 day visit.

I would say that either option is excellent. Of course, you can just rent a car and drive to Seattle and Vancouver/Victoria. If you fly to the Carmel/Monterey area you really should include San Francisco. If you have already been to San Fran, by some chance, then I would suggest going to Seattle and Victoria.
The Monterey Peninsula is lovely. It is all scenery and small town ambience with lots of shops and restaurants and beaches and coastal cliffs, sea life, etc.
Tough problem! I think you will find that Portland is a very attractive city, as well.

Jan 8th -20th 2007. Looking very forward to it!!!!!!Any suggestions/ What about Alaska?
We have been to San Fran before, but arelooking for things to do when family is at work.Overnight is okay as well.

if you aren't driving - and are going in January - you will have some problems getting around. Public transport on the CA coast (except for SF) is pretty dreadful. And you won't be wanting to go to Alaska - about 15 seconds of daylight (slight exaggeration) and really cold temps.
January weather is very iffy in each place you mentioned. In your situation, I'd personally spend a few days in Seattle, then maybe a couple of days in Victoria. Those will be the best w/o a car. Then just spend the rest enjoying Portland.
Or you could fly anywhere from Portland San Diego, FL, even Mexico.

From Portland there are frequent flights to both SF and San Jose. Either bay area airport will serve you fine if you want to go to Carmel/Monterey and the flight is just about 1hr, so it's an easy trip if even for just a few nights.
Keep in mind that it is winter, even in California. No snow along the coast, but not lay on the beach weather either. Right along the coast the probability of fog till mid-day is real as well.
Still though, Carmel and Monterey in January can be very nice. There are many b&b's in Carmel - look for one with a cozy in-room fireplace.
For Carmel, Monterey, or Napa, you'll need a rental car. You CAN use public transportation if you are just going to SF.
