Jamestown, NY . . any advice?
 

Plan on visiting Jamestown in late July for 3-4 days to see a close friend play baseball for the Jamestown Jammers. Any suggestions for lodging, dining, day trips(other than Niagara Falls) will be greatly appreciated!

Dear Buck, Jamestown is very close to Chautauqua Lake. I would definitely plan to find lodging along the lake, it is quite picturesque. Chautauqua Institute is definitely worth a visit. The institute is unique, many Victorian homes at the lakeside, and entertainment to be had just about every day within the institute. Your friend could probably pick up a schedule of entertainers playing during the time of your stay. If you are into scenery and hiking, Allegheny State Park is just a few miles east of Jamestown. Jamestown is the home town of Lucille Ball (I Love Lucy) and there is a museum dedicated to her. I haven't been to the museum, but I've been told it's quite nice. Hope you enjoy your stay, I think you would be happy staying at Lake Chautauqua.

Do you have any favorite restaurants in that area? <BR> <BR>My friend's name is Charles Thomas. He just signed with the Braves on Saturday and arived in Jamestown last night. Charles plays outfield, CF in college at Western Carolina. He's an incredibly fine young man. <BR> <BR>Many thanks for your suggestions.

Chautauqua Institute is worth a visit. Don't be put off by the high admission price. You basically step back in time when you enter the gates. You can stay inside the Institute, but I can't remember any of the hotels/B&Bs. <BR> <BR>Make sure you see a show.

Chatauqua Institute would be great for lodging if you can find space. The Atheneum SP?? on the grounds is the most picturesque they also are supposed to serve great food. The St. Elmo is also supposed to be good. No alcohol on the grounds though. There are some bed & breakfasts located around the lake as well. Downtown Jamestown does have a Holiday Inn. Good restaurants in Jamestown include Ironstone, MacDuffs, Verdino's. A small bar restaurant that serves quality food in great portions is the Belview located in both Jamestown and Falconer. Lazzaroni's in Cassadaga, The White Inn in Fredonia, The Liberty Cafe in Warren PA., and Peak & Peek in Clymer are also very good. The Peak is year round resort with two 18 hole golf courses. The upper course is very highly rated.

For a day trip from Jamestown I'd suggest a visit to Alfred, about 1 1/2 hours to the east. The main attraction here is the International Museum of Ceramics. It's currently in temporary quarters but a new site is in the planning stages. A bit further to the east is the Corning Glass Center which, I'm told, is the third most popular tourist site in New York. We were there earlier this week and were impressed with the recently completed renovation. Driving time from Jamestown would be about 3 hours on the Southern Tier Expressway. Allow at least three hours for the visit, and be prepared for a long wait to see the Stueben glass blowers.
