If you are going to Jackson to visit the Tetons and Yellowstone, my advice is to stay in the parks. The Grand Teton Lodge Company (800)628-9988 will be the same price or cheaper than the lodging in Jackson. Just book FAR IN ADVANCE. We did stay one night in Jackson at the Elk Country Inn. It was a very nice cabin which cost $134 a night.

Jackson is expensive relatively speaking. I stayed at the Buckrail Motel, a small, family-run motel that rated 3 stars in the AAA guide. That overstated it about half a star.

The Signal Mountain Lodge is in the park itself. My well-travelled, adult son stayed there in '97 and endorses it as a good place to stay.

Absolutley, stay in the parks. The main lodge in the Grand Tetons is just great. If you can go upscale, the Jenny Lake Lodge is elegant rustic. In Yellowstone, Old Faithful Inn is a kick, and a dozen years or so ago they restored the Yellowstone Lake Lodge to its turn of the century look. We haven't stayed there, but we ate there and it was very nice.
I also recommend going out (or coming in) by the east gate of Yellowstone and spending at least part of a day (and if it works out a night) in Cody and see the museum there. Besides all the Buffalo Bill memorabilia, which is a curiosity of american culture, they have a first rate western art collection - paintings and bronzes. Even if you aren't "into" western art, this place is worthth the stop.

Have a great trip - gorgeous area.

We were in the Jackson area this past July. Accommodations in Jackson are a bit pricey--we stayed at the Buckrail Lodge and were very happy with the accommodations although they do
charge extra for children over 8. Buckrail Lodge is in a residential area with a mountain behind it yet still within walking distance to all the shops. There are tons of shops, however, after about an hour they all seemed to look alike. I would highly recommend that you go on the Bar-T-Five Covered Wagon Ride and Dinner--we had a ball!! If you go, plan to make reservations in advance.
We also stayed at Signal Mountain Lodge in the Grand Tetons. We had a two bedroom cabin with gorgeous views of Jackson Lake and the mountains. It was by far our favorite place to stay on our whole 4 week trip out west. I would also recommend renting a boat at the marina at Colter Bay Village--it was great!
As far as Yellowstone goes, we stayed at
Grant Village, Canyon Village, and a hotel in West Yellowstone and none of those accommodations were anything to write home about.
Let me know if you have more questions!
