Jackson Wyoming

What is best location to stay at Jackson Wyoming? Will be there in beginning of June. Do you suggest Jackson or Jackson Hole?

I suggest Snake River Lodge, a RockResort at Jackson Hole.

Do you prefer a town (that would be Jackson) or outside of town (somewhere in the region known as Jackson Hole)?

kayd, we would like to see the town, I expect that it would be similar to Vail CO. I am also guessing that the town is where ths hotels, restaurants, etc are located. Also, what type of time frame should we factor into our stay there?

We are planning on three nights in GTNP before our Jackson stop.

Thanks for the help.

I was last in Jackson 30 years ago, but am researching the area for my own trip there later this year. My memory of Jackson is that it is more of a real town than I think the Colorado resort towns are. For example, Jackson is in a broad valley where there are modest motel-type accommodations and local government, while the spas and ski resorts are several miles from the center of town. Jackson's history predates the establishment of the nearby ski facilities; Vail was created specifically as a ski resort town.

If others have more accurate descriptions of Jackson (especially contrasted with Vail) I hope you'll chime in.

We spent 4 nights in GTNP (at Jenny Lake Lodge, mostly hiking, horseback riding and visiting Yellowstone, oh and great food) and 3 nights at Four Seasons Jackson a few years ago and loved both (really, what's not to love). For the Jackson days, we visited the square and window shopped, ate terrific meals at Snake River Grill, Thai Me Up, Wild Sage, and at the Four Seasons, we visited an outdoor art festival/craft show (I actually bought several things), went fishing one day and white water rafting on another, and visited the National Museum of Wild Life art which was cool and the food in the cafe was pretty good. The Four Seasons was not in Jackson but rather Teton Village but we thought the location was fine and we saw a Moose on aptly named Moose Road.

I am in Jackson right now. Jackson Hole city has a lot more happening than Teton Village, that is where Snake Rjver Lodge and the four Seasons is.. Teton Village is not like Vail, it is a lot smaller. Amazing skiing, a couple good bars and restaurants but you definitely want to be in town. We are at the Wort Hotel and I love it. Close to everything, most things are a real short walk, fun bars, live music, stores, galleries, and restaurants. Jackson is a real western old town and it feels authentic. Vail is perfect clean and disneylandish. I would recommend staying in town as Teton Village is about 20 minutes away. We are skiing and i am still very happy we are not slope side. Loads a choices in town, Best Western, Rustic Inn, but I love the Wort, staff is Great, and travelers mix a lot too.

I have not been to the Tetons in about 10 years, but it is STILL one one my favorite places, period. Make time for a raft trip down the Snake (we went with the Triangle X Ranch at the time). Feel free to explore, hard to get lost around there.
The Triangle X is where "Spencer's Mountain" was filmed,
Shane was also filmed in the valley. Don't miss the Gros Vant slide area. Lots of cool side trips, take the time to get of the main road.

The advantage of Teton Village over the town of Jackson is that it is very close to the park entrance. But it sounds like you will be staying in the park before you go to Jackson and that you are interested in Jackson as a destination in itself and not just a stopping point for the park, correct?

In that case, definitely stay right in town. Lots to do there, including an interesting Visitors Center and a museum just across the road, and the elk refuge, in addition to shops, galleries, etc.
I can't recommend any hotels b/c I stayed in Teton Village - Teton Village Lodge, very lovely. IMO, two days/nights in Jackson is sufficient for the town itself.

Are you going anywhere else? Time limits? Personally, I'd spend even more time in the park if you can. It is spectacularly beautiful and in June the weather should be great for hiking, rafting, boat rides, etc.

I like Vail, but I LOVE Jackson - whether you are talking about just the towns or the skiing! Totally different towns and mountains.
