Jackson restaurants
 

We're taking a friend out to dinner in Jackson and need some suggestions a to where to go - we've been gone for 15 years and when we did live there the boys were small so we didn't go out much at all. DH suggested Nick's, but I think a place with more traditional food would work better.

I've tried two places in downtown Jackson, but they're both lunch-only spots, Tony's Hot Tamales on East Capitol Street and a soul food spot a few doors down whose name escapes me at the moment. Both were excellent. Will search and re-post.

The soul food spot was Miller's Grill, also on East Capitol Street.

Last year we spent 2 nights in Jackson. First night we (4 of us)went to Burkes Chop House. Excellent food although a little bit pricey (for us). A good choice for a special meal. It was DH's birthday. The next night we went to the Snake River Brewing Company restaurant. Great casual place. Good beer and nice food. A bit noisy, but what do you expect in a brewery. I would go back to both of them again.

well a lot has changed in 15 years lol, meaning more has developed in the metro area of city than inside the city itself. Don't know how much u looking to spend..I don't play when it comes to nice restaurants and food..

U can try Char(its right off I-55N, take northside dr exit).
"Bonefish grill" in madison is a real good choice(its a grilled fish house). I highly recommend!

Cock on da walk(if u want some good fried catfish). For a good juicy huge hamburger,turkeyburger,freshcut fries, veggie burgers,etc.. try "Cool Al's" formerly stamps burgers.

If u want soul food u can try "Country Kitchen". its right across from Tougaloo college. Very very very good food. even if u do take your friend their to eat, try it before u leave. Ask for some deep fried broccoli while u there.

Walker's Drive In is the best restaurant in Jackson, MS. For good BBQ go to Pig Skin.

Pigskin BBQ serves tamales from Hot Tamale Heaven in Greenville, MS. Take the Ridgeland exit off of I-55 just North Of Jackson, go east, cross the tracks, and when you get to the light, they are in the shopping center across Hwy 51. They also have the distinction of having the best plate lunch, best catfish, best ribs, and as I found out today, the best pork chops available anywhere!

Elite has good breakfast and lunch. Mayflower has good seafood downtown.

I remember going in there to eat late one evening many years ago. The late Senator Jim Eastland had been dining with friends and aides, dining well, apparently, and drinking well, too. Mr Jim was so drunk he could not stand up, and his aides had to haul him bodily to the car, two lifting his shoulders, another pulling his legs along and lifting them over the threshold. People averted their eyes from the scene, giving an old man his dignity.

Does Al's Half Shell still exist? Friday afternoons, lawyers, reporters, cops, and some of the younger Millsaps College faculty would gather there for a dozen on the shell, a plate of the best red beans and rice I have ever eaten, and french bread that had been brought up on the train from NO that morning, all washed down with icy Jax beer. It was a symposium for the mind and soul as it was a feast for the body, and many philosophical and political issues were worked out as the afternoon passed.

Senator Eastland lived about 25 miles from my home. He was a real character just like you describe. Parlor Market just took over Al's Half Shell's old spot. I remember just like you do.

If you want good food in MS go to the Delta. Go to Greenwood, MS and stay at the 4 * Alluvian Hotel owned by Viking Range. Go to Giardinia's, Lusco's or Crystal Grill. Go to Doe's Eat Place in Greenville, MS. Lillo's in Leland, MS has outstanding Italian. Clarksdale, MS has Ground Zero, Abe's, Hick's, Madidi's and Ranchero. Go to Oxford, MS the home of University of Mississippi and William Faulkner. Dine at City Grocery.

Jackson has nice restaurants but nothing like the Delta.
