Its advice not advise

I am so sorry. I had to do it. Advice is the noun, advise is the verb. I guess it's just a pet peeve because I am certainly not the grammer queen. I realize that we are all typing fast and that email and the internet have their own language. This particular misusage, however, occurs quite often on this site.
Call this a troll if you must. Dis me all you want. It had to be said.

j_999_9 Aug 5th, 2005 10:34 AM

Tell me you didn't purposely misspell "grammar."

iceeu2 Aug 5th, 2005 10:40 AM

Birdie..you are correct...the GRAMMER queen you are not...now if you learn to spell "grammar" perhaps you will be crowned and will be able to ask for advise.

Birdie Aug 5th, 2005 10:45 AM

Hee, hee. Perhaps it is speling kween.

Citylghts Aug 5th, 2005 10:49 AM

I thought the Grammer queen was Kelsey's wife.

It's bothered me for a while also because my degree was in English. Now, did you just want the sandwich or the combo for $1.59 extra?;-)

seetheworld Aug 5th, 2005 10:49 AM

Birdie, Birdie, Birdie, "Its" should be "It's" afterall, you mean "it is" :D :D

GoTravel Aug 5th, 2005 10:51 AM

It isn't definately.

Please stop seperate.

tpatricco Aug 5th, 2005 10:52 AM

Birdie, The advice/advise thing is like nails on a chalkboard to me too.

That and it's definitely NOT definately. UGH.

tpatricco Aug 5th, 2005 10:53 AM

GO, GMTA. :)

GoTravel Aug 5th, 2005 10:59 AM

seetheworld, didn't Birdie right it's?

:-D

OO Aug 5th, 2005 11:01 AM

Speaking of nails on a chalkboard. It's <b>ST. PETE BEACH</b> for cryin' out loud, <i>not</i> St. Pete'<b>s</b> Beach...although it may sometimes resemble what his beach might look like. LOL

And there's a lot of lightning in FL and NOT lightening!

OMG that felt good! :D

tpatricco Aug 5th, 2005 11:04 AM

OO, Do you have any idea how many people on Carib board insist on calling my favorite island St. John's? It's ST JOHN in the USVI. St. John's is in Newfoundland for God's sake!!

You're right...that did feel good. :D

Birdie Aug 5th, 2005 11:05 AM

Seetheworld was exactly right. I may have spelled it correctly in the body of the post but the title is &quot;way more&quot; important and should have been correct.

MarionCK Aug 5th, 2005 11:07 AM

Another grammar queen here. Although I certainly flunked punctuation class.

And without spell check here I find myself with my dictionary close at hand.

Definitely seems to be at the top of the list

Your and you're

it's and its'

separate and seperate

I could go on, but it's enough to make us question all those old spelling tips we learned ;-)

We could then go on to the new *text msg* appreviations that truly send me over the edge.

How do u feel about that language ;-) ?

Marion

seetheworld Aug 5th, 2005 11:08 AM

:D Don't be too hard on yourself, Birdie!!!!

I's gotta get to the store now. See ya latter alligattor ;)

MarionCK Aug 5th, 2005 11:08 AM

Oh Lord,

That should have been abbreviations !

I also flunked proofreading/editing class :-)

Well, while we're at it - it's Niagara not Niagra. Even the Black Eyed Peas spelled it wrong in their &quot;Don't Phunk with My Heart&quot; video!

I'm a foodie as well as a Fodorite, so this is from my foodie side: using marinade when it should be marinate!

Tiff Aug 5th, 2005 11:20 AM

Tolerance is such a beautiful word.

tpatricco Aug 5th, 2005 11:32 AM
