Itinerary in Alaska in August
My husband and I are visiting Alaska in August and would like suggestions for our trip. We love photography and nature. So far we just have Denali planned...Any ideas? We are willing to take the ferry or trains.
|
Other suggestions: a boat trip through Kenai Fjords Nat Park, drives to Homer or Valdez, hikes in Chugach State Park or on the Kenai Peninsula.

Just drive around Alaska and you'll have no trouble finding beautiful places to photograph. Nature is half planning and half luck; go to places where wildlife abound, and WHEN they come out (i.e, at dusk), then hope for good fortune.

thanks for the info!

The Richardson Highway (the road the pipeline followed north from Seward) is incredibly scenic - even for Alaska! If you rent a car, buy a copy of "Milepost" - even if you won't have a car, you might want to at least take a look at it as you plan you trip. They have a website: www.themilepost.com
If you are there over Labor Day weekend, you might enjoy a day at the state fair in Palmer.
Take LOTS of film!

One more comment...
Make reservations for Denali (lodging/ camping/ buses) well before your trip. Check it out on the web: www.nps.gov

I can tell you, the greatest thing I did when my relatives came to visit me here was to take them to Exit Glacier in Seward and then to climb the Harding Icefield. It was awesome. On the way day we took the path to the actual glacier. Before we started our hike, there was a bear chowing down on some berries up the mountain. We heard all sorts of wildlife, especially marmots and tried the berries on the way (they were aweful). It took all day from Anchorage and we got back at about 9.

agree with paul's post on the kenai peninsula. also you can take the ferry to sitka. great museum there with an enormous amount of native american artifacts - sheldon jackson museum. also great hiking there in tongass national forest. in juneau, go to mendenhall glacier, you can hike practically next to it. i'm sure there are even tours that get you on it, as well. my next alaska vacation will include kayaking on prince william sound.

Michelle
Alaska is everything you've dreamed about. I agree with everthing Paul suggested and also include the drive on Richardson Highway. The pass going into Valdez is breathtaking. Also train ride from Anchorage to Seward is wonderful. If you do go to Valdez, drive north from there and take the Denali Highway across to denali B]national Park. It is a good drive, few tourists and very beautiful
