Itinerary Advice - Colorado Trip
Hi all!
I am driving myself crazy trying to put an itinerary together for my husband and I. We are traveling from Pittsburgh to Denver from July 31- Aug 7th.
At first, I was like most planners -- all over the place and driving in a car the whole time with my plans! This is our first time to Colorado, so we are very excited! I have taken all advice on altitude sickness as well.
With the help of previous posters, I have narrowed some of my ideas down accepting that I will be returning in future years! So far, this is what I am coming up with.... bare with me!
Sunday -- get in around 10 am.... stay in and around Boulder area
Monday/Tuesday -- travel to Estes Park, stay there 2 nights??? Plan on light hiking at RMNP day one, then day two head out along Trail Ridge Road.
Wednesday/Thursday -- need suggestions!!!
Friday (night) -- Concert @ Red Rocks Amphitheater in Lakewood. Plan on staying somewhere in between Lakewood and Colorado Springs.
Saturday -- Colorado Springs attractions
Sunday -- leave for home around 3.
Ok... so for the middle of the trip. I am tossing around the ideas/suggestions of ... Steamboat Springs (Strawberry Park), Aspen (Maroon Bells), Frisco/Lake Dillon area, Breckenridge. My husband and I do much better with an itinerary. We like to see attractions per say, light hikes, flower gardens, farm to table "foodie" restaurants, breweries, B & B's. Something relaxing.
Any help is appreciated -- thanks in advance!

The first couple of days are OK. Trail Ridge Road will take a good portion of Wednesday especially if you do much stopping. For Wednesday and Thursday I would plan on Breckenridge or perhaps Frisco. On Thursday you could do a long day trip through Leadville, Independence Pass into the south side of Aspen and then through Glenwood Springs, Glenwood canyon, Vail, Vail pass and back to Breckenridge. That would be a lot in one day.
On Friday, hit Georgetown coming into Denver. Not sure how Red Rocks and Lakewood got tangled together but Red Rocks is in Morrison. I would stay anywhere in Golden or along the I-70 corridor just east of Golden. Convenient to Red Rocks.
Skip C Springs - you don't have time. Cannot believe you are coming to Denver and not seeing Denver. I would drive into Denver on Sat and stay in the downtown area. Dump the car. Sunday pm take the train to the airport.

Just so you know: The Colorado Dept. of Transportation recently started a "Bustang" bus service from Union station in Denver to Glenwood Springs. It leaves at 8:05AM every day.
The Glenwood Springs drop off point is at the RFTD bus depot.
RFTD will get you to Aspen.
Coming eastbound from Glenwood Springs the Amtrak California Zephyr is very scenic.

Thank you for the advice. Sorry about the mix up of the location of Red Rocks.
Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks combined forces to make the band. Great group & we've always wanted to see a show there.

If you have time to stop, we love the hot springs pool in Glenwood. It's a little expensive but a treat for us. Also, it looks like the Rockies will be in town the end of you trip if you have any interest in baseball. Coors field is pretty cool.
