It Sure is Busy in Kauai!

I'm back from a fantastic trip to Ireland and Paris. Paris is amazing--but it was FREEZING--and I still like Kauai better ;-).

When I returned (before my brain had even arrived) I started making arrangements for my next visit to Kauai, and I had a terrible surprise. There were NO units available at my beloved Sealodge (sniff, sniff) unless I wanted to pack up and move three times (and pay three cleaning fees). With great trepidation I've booked the only thing I could find which is a 2-bedroom oceanfront unit at Ali'i Kai (also in Princeville).

FYI, I checked VRBO and private listings, and was even willing to stay on the Coconut Coast--and I couldn't find anything suitable. That's never happened to me before. Even in the winter high season I've been able to snag great last minute deals.

Well, the good news is that I'll get to spend three weeks in paradise in five more weeks. From there, I'll work in Australia and New Zealand. Leaving from Kauai cuts more than 8 hours off the travel time. Then I'll return to Kauai for five more weeks (including the Kauai music festival: www.kauaimusicfestival.com). I like my life!!!

For those five weeks there are only three Sealodge one-bedrooms to choose from--and none that are among my top choices (although they'll be fine)--and only one two-bedroom that I might take in case my sister does her annual visit. I'd better make up my mind fast.

A newspaper article said Kauai tourism is up 10%--but this seemed like a lot more than that. Sounds like I'll have to plan farther in advance!

We just returned from Hawaii, Kauai and the Big Island, because of you and NapSter we did have the Mac pancakes at the Kountry Kitchen....next time ONE and we split it :-) We had them again on the Big Island and they were served with sliced banana's on top which was really great!
Good for you for travelling so much! Wish we could!

songdoc.....let us know how your accommodations are at Ali'i Kai. I love your life too. Any job that would allow me to go to and stay that long on Kauai would be okay with me. I know, I know, you are working but still you are working in paradise. I am yearning to get back. Last visit wasn't that great as DH got pretty sick. Need my Kauai fix andit doesn't look it will be before 2014.....Ugg

Shar: 2014, :(, I feel your pain...DH & I went to Kauai in May 07 and didn't get a chance to return until May 2011! Those four years was a lifetime and will never happen again if I can help it! After May 2011, we went in Sept 2012 and we will be there again in 74 days!!! Here's hoping your trip will come sooner rather than later!

Songdoc: I can't believe you can't get into the Sealodge and during the month of April. That's not even high peak summer season! What is going on with our island? This past January I tried to book a convertible but found it sold out with a few major rental car companies including the one I always use. I've never had to book a car before January for a May trip. Airline prices never went down and they are above $1000. One morning I happened to check it and the flight was $883 so we locked it in and bought those then it went back up and has never gone down. I noticed during our May 2011 trip that the island was much busier than I thought/hoped it would be. When we went in Sept 2012 it was much quieter and the weather was dry/sunny. I would say that September would be my favorite month to go to Kauai.

I'm just drooling over your Paris pictures, and now, insult to injury, you want to tell me you are back in Paradise!

Kauai is a dump.

Lookin_Glass Mar 11th, 2013 02:02 PM

Once upon a time there was a group of merry pranksters who were deemed humourless by Nurse Ratchet for telling truths about the garden island.

Then there was Little Andy, the author of the Blue Book, who discovered Kauai. He was so excited that he had trumped Christopher Columbus and Captain Cook that he sold the island's hidden gems to cash in on his own personal paradise.

When you truly love something, you hold it close. You don't flaunt it. You don't sell it for profit. And you don't brag about it.

Besides:

Maui mo bettah. Perhaps it is time to reprint that bumper sticker " If you Heart Kauai, send your friends to Maui" I cherish mine - a most special gift from a cherished island dj.

< " If you Heart Kauai, send your friends to Maui" >

I love that! I think I'd better take it to heart.

I've booked my June/July trip in a "budget" condo at Sealodge. E8 for $95/nt. The agent told me that it hasn't been renovated, and has no WiFi -- but that the view is FABULOUS. That's all I care about.

There were only two other units open for my entire June/July stay. I'm not telling anyone else about that place!!!

rncheryl: thanks so much for the nice comments about the Paris pix. I still have to post the Ireland pix from the same trip. FYI, I'm not back in paradise--yet. April 15th.

wekewoody Mar 12th, 2013 06:14 PM

June?

Mister Woody and I will be in Hanalei the last two weeks in June! We like dumps.

Like I said earlier, We are in Kauai right now. Shared dinner was chicken pot pie from the right slice, Chicken dinner from chicken in a barrel, and Paradise pie chocolate haupua pie up and Lilikoi cheesecake. There's enough pie left for breakfast!!! LG, I have that same bumper sticker!!
