We are going to Sonoma next month. If you go during the week, you will not find huge crowds or bad traffic in Sonoma Valley. My husband and I often hike and walk while there, after all there are mountains! Hence VALLEY. I love some of the shops in the small towns...loads of local goodies and gourmet items and CHEESE. Yes, each winery has its own character. J Winery is a modern, stunning place which offers food pairing with wine. Gloria Ferre....a glass of sparkling wine with gorgeous views. I like active vacations and enjoy many, many kinds of travel but really love the beauty and fun of exploring wine country. We often visit tiny family owned venues where we meet the entire group of owners/winemakers and their pets. We've had impromptu "tours" and learned so much. Don't worry about drinking- you are supposed to TASTE, not drink and you can split tastings. Keep food and water in the car if you go and plan for a full breakfast and lunch. Great restaurants everywhere. I would NEVER book a group tour...too confining and def no spontaneous moments.

peterboy, all good advice... but I've spent time in that area (Monterey, Big Sur, Carmel). And LOVED it -- I also did that boat tour of Elkhorn Slough, and what an amazing thing -- like being in a National Geographic documentary! Walked around Point Lobos, Julia Pfeiffer, redwoods, etc. For anyone reading this, check out peter's pics!
