JohnD, I wish...since the prices have skyrocketed in the last few years I don't think I could get a one room shack for less than 500,000. I can imagine that the Anini Beach House must be worth at least a couple mil.
Heretoday, the things you mentioned I feel we are already doing. Like you, we don't like mega-resorts and stay in private rentals, shopping at local markets, etc. I especially love farmer's markets. It appalls me that people are not better educated about respecting the sacred sites, wildlife and ecology. Maybe we should push for a short informational booklet to be given out right on the airplane on flights to Hawaii. |
John: I was asking about historical articles on the reasons for America's overthrow of the Hawaiian government, not about current Japanese tourism. :) I've never read a credible historical account that claimed Japan had any "intentions" (as Waldo put it) in Hawaii.

Maggi,
I see that PBS film is airing again on 9/1, as is the new "Hawaii" series. My own experience in touring Hawaii finds Americans working inside those "mega resorts", and those detailed questionaire forms we already fill out on the plane to Hawaii in my opinion seem to be geared towards understanding and promoting tourism from the mainland to Hawaii. Sorry for being off-target to your query fdecarlo, though I believe the articles referenced indicate a desire by some to have more tourists visit Hawaii. |
