Is This Drive possible
We are in the planning stages of our trip to SF and Mendocino and Humbolt counties. Thinking of driving from Healdsburg to Crescent City and want to make it there in one day.
Is this too much driving for a day? we would be staying somewhere near The Redwood National Park for a couple of nights. |
You'll get more responses if you put some detail in the question - this could be anyplace from Maine to FLorida
|
Very long drive but anything is possible and also depending on the time of year for weather. Crescent City is usually foggy anyway.
|
Looked up the distance traveling by car and it is about 6-7 hours. Not as far as I remembered. So it is possible.....
|
The distance is about 285 miles, which isn't too much driving for me.
If you don't mind me asking, why are you attracted to Crescent City as a destination? HTTY |
Definitely possible, but certainly not a fun drive in a day. But I drove all the way from Crescent City to San Francisco in one long day, so I know that you can do it, and I even did a stretch on Highway 1 to get a bit of the scenery, but you'll get there faster on the highway.

When do you plan this drive? And is it just point to point -- or do you plan on scenic stops along the way?
AND -- if you are going to Mendocino, why are you driving all the way to Crescent City? Or do you plan on hitting Mendocino on the way back south? The 'when' is important since right now it would be an absolutely hellacious drive in pouring rain and probably take the best part of an entire day. Crescent City itself is no great shakes -is there a reason you want to stop there? Give us some more detail --like when, and if this is a circular route (like Healdsburg > CC > Mendocino > SF) or if you are trying to squeeze in Mendocino on this one day's drive. |
Ok here it is in more detail.....We will drive from SF to Healdsburg to stay for 3 days and then wanted to drive North to visit Redwood Nat'l Park(i just gave Crescent city as a ballpark destination)then we would head back down to stay in Mendocino area for a night or 2 before going to the pinot Noir Festival in Anderson Valley. this would all take place in early to mid May 2011. Hope this is more clear and maybe someone could tweak it for me.
Thanks all. |
Cornelius, just to let you know that once we did this drive after a morning arrival in San Fran after a fourteen hour trip from Sydney, Australia. Over twenty years ago now, and we carried a small tent all the way and camped that first night under the redwoods in the National Park. So it's doable, easily, but as mentioned above, much more enjoyable if you stop and smell the roses on the way.
