O
I had to go to Waco many years ago for a Duke University sponsored ceremony for 7th graders who outscored high school juniors/seniors on SAT exams (not really much of an accomplishment in TX, imhpo).
As bad/nasty/hot as Waco was, I returned to Dallas to meet a DISD 7th grade teacher in a tire store the same afternoon who told me her entire professional day revolved around trying to keep the children (her 7th grade DISD students) in their seats and being unable to teach anything to anyone. Few could read/write.
She was dumbfounded that any 7th grader could even begin to attempt the SAT, and freely admitted that the one and only reason she was still in the DISD was the generous teacher pension.
I was depressed and cried for weeks.
I'll never forget my only trip to Waco.
M (SMdA, Gto.)
PS: Guess she was not on the DISD Talented and Gifted Faculty, lol!

Visit the site of the Branch Davidian compound.

That's really interesting as all teachers in Texas contribute to the one and only Teacher Retirement System (TRS). I don't think you spoke with the most intelligent teacher on earth and certainly not one representative of the state. Don't cry for Texas. It isn't perfect, but ... never mind. I got lost and thought I was in the education chat room.

Back on topic. There isn't so much to do in Waco besides the museums and walking the campus.

Texas Ranger Museum
Cruise on the riverboat
Drive just a little bit up the road to Hillsboro and go shopping at the outlet malls
Eat at the Health Camp restaurant

Mike, that's why I keep telling people not to put their kids in DISD schools...

Thank you everyone. I will be finished with my meetings at 5PM every day. That gives me a lot of time to roam the city.

wsoxrebel and CP,
Amen y'all.
Wow, it's been nearly 20 years, but I did pass through on the way to SMdA by car in April '05. Didn't even bother to stop for the cheaper gas, lol.

I think the Texas Sports Hall Of Fame is there.

I believe the Dr. Pepper Museum closes at 4:00 and the Texas Ranger Museum closes at 5:00. If your meetings finish at 5:00, you probably will need to find other things to do, and unless Waco has changed drastically since I went to school at Baylor, your other options will be limited.

Dallas and Austin are both an hour and a half away by car. If you aren't tired, a drive to either would probably be worth it.
