Is there a place in Manhattan to (legally) get discounts on "real" (as opposed to knock off) purses?

NewbE - very true!
missypie, when you go to Maine will you be stopping in Freeport? Woodbury Common is great - and overwhelming! - but probably too out of the way for this trip. However, Freeport Maine (home of LL Bean) has a lot of outlets, including a Coach one: check out freeportusa.com. (As a total aside, for local Maine gifts, we love Edgecomb Potters; edgecombpotters.com. They have shops in Freeport and Portland; their studio closer to Boothbay Harbor has seconds and other sales...)

Macy's bought Foley's in Texas and I have found amazing bargains on designer bags, watches and sunglasses.
I have found even better bargains at Dillard's. The stores vary wildly but the Northpark location in Dallas regularly marks things to 75% off.

Oops, I meant to say that on my last 3 trips to NYC, Century 21 has been a total waste of time.
One of the clerks said that between the international tourists and the eBay resellers that WORK at the store and get first dibs, it's slim pickins for the desirable styles.

Aduchamp, we still say that in Brooklyn! But then again, if someone tries to tell me I don't live "in the city", I am oh-so-quick to correct them that I do live in one of the five boroughs of NYC. Ah, the contradiction... (And FWIW, I live in west Brooklyn, so quite urban and close to Manhattan.)

You're right-it was Foley's that Macy's bought...you can tell how much department store shopping I do.
Very interesting...go to work at a discount place like Centruy 21 for the purpose of buying bargains to sell on Ebay. Pretty clever.

You would not believe how much money store employees are making selling clearance items on eBay.
Most of the time they are even protected by return policies.
They leave the tags and everything attached and if the item does not sell, they return it with the receipt.
Many of these auctions have a starting bid or reserve of the price paid, sometimes including a small profit.

There is a small, achingly hip outlet store in West Chelsea that carries designer clothes and shoes and handbags - Find Outlet on 17th St. between 8th and 9th Avenue. They are very hit or miss- but definitely worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood - worthwhile if you hit the original Loehman's at 7th Avenue and 17th Street.
At 7:45 AM on a weekday, C21 will not be unduly crowded, just some wacky tourists and a few desperate shopppers on their way into the office - it's an easy walk from your hotel.
You also might check the New York Magazine site : http://nymag.com/shopping/ which lists a sales calendar for the week and has a pretty good shopping guide. Also check out Daily Candy and Manhattan Users Guide.
