Is there a New York Restaurant with a "Story" behind it? Or Famous Chef?
 

My co worker is going to NY and she is looking for a restaurant with a "Story" behind it or with a "Famous Chef".

Is there a restaurant in NY where something "happened" (bad or good) that is still open today?

No. There are no restaurants in NYC that have famous stories or famous chefs. All restaurants in the City have been replaced by Brinker chains, McDonald's and Yum! Foods franchises.

There are no unique things in New York whatsoever.

I think people are picking on your friend because there are dozens and perhaps more dozens of restaurants that have famous chefs and just as many with historic backgrounds and events.

Your friend should really do some research before asking such a vague question. People donate their time to answer questions here, but people who do that a lot expect the poster or the poster's friend to do some basic research on their own. Would she be more interested in a favorite historic restaurant like 21, a major food scene like Balthazar, or where her favorite movie star likes to go?

Umberto's Clam House in Little Italy, but don't eat there - the food is awful, maybe even to die from [as opposed to "to die for".

They might want to head for Elaine's, 21, France's Tavern or the latest trrendiest famous for Paris and her trendetters.

Give us a clue what your co-worker is looking for - budget, cuisine, atmosphere.

Fraunces Tavern, south of Wall Street, is great for History buffs.

vjpblovesitaly: I thought you invented this little story and it would be a satire. Especially the names! They are hilarious: Anthony Tony Roach Rampino and the others!

Then I opened the link and I found out that reality beats satire.

Now I know for sure: If I am biting on something hard in Sparks Steak House, it is a bullet. Bon appetit!

Monk's on Seinfeld is really Tom's Restaurant on the upper west side.
Also Seinfeld's Soup Nazi episode was based on Soup Kitchen International

In their "Lincoln Room" they claim to have the original Playbill that Lincoln was holding the night he was shot in Fords theater!!!!

I have seen it, I tell the story, but I still do not believe it!! It is something you would think would be in the Smithstonian instead of a 'chophouse'!
