Is the New York subway safe?

About six months ago, we got off the A train at 14th Street. My wife saw a young woman drop her bag and then she walked to the edge of the platform and dangled her legs. A young man ran over and pulled her away from the edge. I ran over to the girl and grabbed her arm and would not let go. She started crying, "Let me go, I want to die." She was about 13-15, dressed in expensive clothing, perfect make-up and perfect teeth. My wife went to get the cops and I just grasped her arm and would not let go. We were now on seated on the platform. Another young woman came over and held her head and tried to comfort her but she so distraught and inconsolable, she could not tell us her name or her problem. I continued to hold her as tight as I could. The police arrived what seemed like 15 minutes later and handcuffed her. Oddly enough they did not take a statement from me or the other young woman.
A few minutes later we saw the young woman who tried to offer solace on the bus and she was quite shaken. We told her she did something important and changed another's live. She asked what did I think the problem could have been. I told her it could be anything from a continuing mental illness to over reaction from a sadistic text. Whatever the case, she needed professional help.

There is NO need to be scared of the subway unless you have claustrophobia - but you do need to keep your wits about you. If you are not prepared to do that you should not travel to NYC - or frankly - anywhere at all.
