Is the Muse in Manhattan a squeaky clean hotel?

I have a chance to stay there around Christmas at a very good price (rooms are tight at this point)but won't do it if carpets are soiled and if bedspreads and linens, drapes aren't very clean.

I can handle problems with room layout and small room/bathroom etc. but don't want to stay in a worn out hotel.

Any advice?

Hi Mike,

I asked the question this way because evaluations of hotels can be so subjective. I have looked these hotels up on other sites and there have been a few negative comments about cleanliness.

You can probably tell that I've been stung before even after doing research. Some people aren't sensitive to cleanliness as long as it's not excessive.

I particularly don't like walking around on soiled carpet, sleeping under dirty blankets and smelling accumulated odors in the upholstery and drapes.

The majority of hotels in the States meet those requirements even the discount chains. New York hotels have gotten so expensive that anything other than a 5 star has become less and less dependable.

I have a fav hotel in NYC but it's sold out. Just thought I'd ask about the Muse. I'm not a germ freak but a truth seeker. I'm confused by reviews.

You might want to check out tripadvisor.com. There will be lots of candid reviews of the Muse and just about every hotel posted by people who've stayed there.

I did check tripadvisor before posting here and that's why I'm confused. The hotel gets some high marks but when I read the reviews I found comments like this:

Described as a boutique 4* hotel in NY one would expect at least basic standards of cleanliness and courtesy. However, both were severly lacking. Stained carpets and bedding,

The decor wasn't brilliant but the room was by no means shabby. There were a few stains on the carpet but this was barely noticeable.

do have to say that the hotel has begun to show its age compared to the last time we were here a couple of years ago--the walls are getting banged up,

On the other hand there is also this:

Room was large and very clean.

Cleanliness is in the eye of the beholder.

I suppose I can give it a chance - it's only a few days and I'll survive. : )

I'm just a bit weary of late of paying for poor housekeeping and maintenance.
To me it's the least a hotel can offer.

Hi Kakalena,
My husband goes on businesstrips a lot to NY, and when possible (read: when rates are good) he loves to stay at the Muse.
Only for the last 1.5 year I've been booking him in hotel 'the Time Hotel'(because of the high rates at the Muse).
But rooms in the Muse are big, and I have never had any problems with cleanliness.

I think this is simply a matter of how picky/realistic you are. If you insist that everything is the room be pristine (carpet, drapes, no markes on the furniture etc) you should stay only in hotels that are either brand new or just renovated.

I've stayed at the Muse several times, although the last time was over a year ago. I've always found it very clean (and I'm picky about that) and love that they have sheets on both sides of the blanket. Beware: their sea loofa soap is addictive!

There have been "blue light" tests done on the finest hotels worldwide and not a one of them gets a completely sanitized report. You don't want to know what has been found, where and what it was! I always wonder if any of our own abodes would pass such testing.

So, cleanliness is in the eyes of the occupant!

Sandi, Yes, I know about the tests you mention. They don't bother me and I'm not germaphobic. Thanks for the info.

My question originated with the problem of paying hundreds of dollars per night for a worn, dirty, shabby room. Because of the expensive NYC market that can happen more easily there than in other cities.

I'm booked so no more comments neeeded.

I know what you mean. I've paid big bucks for rooms in NYC that I wouldn't pay $50 for in most other places. But then again I've paid as little as $100 on Priceline and gotten some real gems in NY - The Carlton on Madison Avenue and the Doubletree Metropolitan were two very nice surprises.

Back to report that the Muse is a very well-maintained hotel.

My room was large, nicely furnished, large new marble bath and very clean with lovely linens. Turn down service w/biscotti.

The front desk staff was young, (hired for a look perhaps?) and helpful when asked. I have read reports on other
sites that say they are snobbish.

I didn't find that at all. I think they are young and not trained or supervised all that well but not that it would affect my choice of the hotel again. It was extremely convenient to the theater district too.
