I would love to see the old leprosy settlement area (Saw the video "Father Damien"). We are in our 50's and thought this would be a safe but thrilling ride. Will we be too sore to walk the next day? Is it worth the trip? Please give all the details you can about your experience. Thanks.

It takes about 1 1/2 hrs to go down and another 1 1/2 hrs back up....The mules are sure footed....and as the guide tells you "trust your animal".

Actually if you just lean back and enjoy the ride it is quite pleasant.
I did not suffer from any 'after effects'.....There was one couple that were there for the second time..very enjoyable.

I went on the ,ule ride to molokai about 15 years ago, when i was about 15. it was well worth it. it was one of the more unusual experiences i've had traveling. i remember being motion sick from the flight over from honolulu and i wasn't sure if i would be up for it. but i went for it and i don't remember being too sore the next day.. go for it!

We did the mule ride last June at ages 57 and 62. We have done the Grand Canyon muleride and this one makes that look like child's play! The mules are very surefooted but be aware that they come within inches of the edge. There are 24 switchback turns, if memory serves, and the trail is all built-in stone stairs so the ride is quite bumpy with the animals negotiating the steps. Going down was more difficult than coming up. The views are spactacular but if you are at all afraid of heights, this is not for you. The ride around the settlement is via non-air conditioned bus with several stops at various bldgs. and a box lunch served outside at a beautiful spot with little wild pigs running around. The flight over on a very small plane was also an adventure, esp. on the way back because there were storm clouds bumping the plane around. We had no problems with aches and pains afterwards and we are not riders but we both exercise regularly. On the way down, strong leg muscles are a definite asset. We would do it again if we ever get back there.
