Is the Hotel Del (San Diego) worth the money?
 

I just made reservations at the Hotel Del for 4 nights in early July. I am beginning to have second thoughts after reading some reviews on Trip Advisor. I will be traveling with my husband and 2 year old daughter. We have been to the area before. Thanks for your input.

Depends on what they're charging you. And how much the money matters to you. And if you're getting the beautiful older section - or the boring newer one.

What to expect:

- Lots of tourists in all public areas - as a hotel resident you feel like a fish in an aquarium.

- Often large conferences, with hundreds of people running around.

- The suites with seaview are directly at the boardwalk. No privacy at all.

- The whole area is crowded.

You are lucky you have a reservation in July...Coronado beach was rated #1 as top beach in the US..
I love the Del..walk across the street and eat at Brigantine for the best seafood happy hour..
Hopefully you got a decent rate but July is pricey anywhere in SD but you are staying at a classic hotel and it really is laughable what some of the other posters have stated!

Oh my - YES! I have the most wonderful picture of my 7 year old daughter in the terry cloth robe they provide with a towel on her wet hair sitting on the balcony. We had a Mom and me day away from my sister's house (we were visiting from Massachusetts). Worth every penny. We rollerbladed, shopped and beached.
Do it.

We have stayed there many times over the years and always enjoyed it. Maybe we have just lucked out, but we have never felt it was crowded with tourists or even hotel guests. The beach is very nice, and it is fun to watch the jets from the adjacent base fly over. We have always stayed in the older section and been pleased with our rooms. Even if you don't get an ocean view room, the ones of the inner courtyard are nice too. But the ocean view rooms of course are great. The Sunday brunch is great too, if that interests you.

I read those reviews, too, and it is one reason I am staying elsewhere.

But you read them...a mixed bag IMO...all depends on what's important to you.

I agree it can be hard to decide, especially when you've got some diva going on and on about how the place is "rare excellence" and a "precious monument" but rates it only as 2.5 for value and then all those 3.0's....a disappointing no-brainer for me but what do I know?

I only passed through lobby areas and peered into dining room. Seemed like a lot of the clientele were older. Might be a concern with a 2 year old. Nice though to be right on the beach for her.

I thought the place was a bit "stuffy" and pseudo-sophisticated. IMHO. It was a "maybe" as far as Worth walking through and looking at Christmas time to see decorations.

I'd head to LaJolla to stay and play; more youthful and fun.

We stayed 3 nights at the Del this past December and loved the place! We had a room in the Victorian section which was very nice and well appointed. There was a small balcony with views of the inner courtyard and gazebo which was very pretty. :)

The concierge was very helpful, we dined at both of the restaurants, 1500 Ocean was amazing and the Sheerwater was great for breakfast each morning. We got our room for $250/night which included a $20/day resort certificate to use wherever we wanted, also discount tickets to SeaWorld and pretty 2006 Christmas ornament that sold for $20 in the gift shop.

We used the pool each day, it was wonderful as was the jacuzzi, my husband had a nice massage at the spa there and we loved the beach in back of the property. I would stay here again our next visit to the area. ***kim*** ((f))

Thanks for the input. It seems that I am not getting a very good deal. Since I don't necessarily have to visit during high season I think that I will postpone this trip until the Fall or Winter. I think that I'll make another trip to the Grand Canyon North Rim instead. Thanks again your advice helped me make my decision.

Fall is a wonderful time to visit Southern California - the weather is often nicer then June early July. Be advised if you are not aware that we are not "tropical" in weather...so the winter can be "cool".

It is unfortunate that the most recent reviews of the hotel on TripAdvisor seem to be the worst of all.

I would love to have stayed there but...

That is too bad because it really is a gorgeous property..unlike anything out there.
If I were SunnyAZ, I would of kept my reservation, since July is a wonderful time to go.

june and sometimes early july is often cloudy in the morning. i love the hotel del coronado and the beach. it is wonderful and worth it. be sure to rent bicycles at holland bike shop on orange ave. and ride around the island.
tent city is a good restaurant. miguel's cantina is great mexican cuisine.
try to do a tour on north island of a navy ship.
if you like golf the glorietta golf course (public course) is beautiful.
the lamb's players theater is does great performances.
it is a wonderful family town-very safe and like going back to the 50's.

Two questions:
1. How did you find the "great deals" at Hotel Del?
2. For those of you that thought LaJolla would be a better choice- what hotels would you reccomend? (Labor Day weekend)

For the Del, I sign up for their e-mail even though I live here..
In La Jolla, I like Grande Colonial Hotel, La Jolla Shores Hotel or Hotel La Jolla..
