Is the hike to South Point/Green Sand Beach worth it?

We're going to the Big Island in February and are debating on whether or not to plan a hike to Green Sand Beach. How long does the hike take? Did you enjoy it? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have done the hike to green sands once. It wasn't the best experience becuase it was rainy and cold, but I would probably do it again on a nice day. We looked and said wow and got back to the car as fast as possible. If you don't have 4 wheel drive, you will have to park your car at the end of the main road. Then you hike out about 2 miles. If you have 4X you can drive out there. The beach is not protected so make sure the waves aren't taking over the whole beach before you go down. (You hike down a little bit to get to the actual beach.) DO NOT go out of the bay because the current can take you south forever! Have fun!

I forgot. There is a black sand beach called "Punalu'u" north of green sand. You get to it from the highway (mile 56) while heading north. There will be signs. The water is cold because of the underwater springs but there are tons of turtles. There are also BBQ pits, showers and camp sites available. Enjoy!

Becky,

More than one of my friends has said the only reason to hike all the way to that beach is to say you did! With all the great things to do on Hawaii, I'm not sure I'd waste my time! Just MHO!

Thanks for your replies! I'll probably wait to see how much free time we have, and see what the weather is like before we make a decision. -Becky

My husband and I were on the Big Island in June '98. We drove a little way in, but then the road became really bad, huge ditches filled with rain. We left the car on the side of the road and started walking, and walking, and walking. We never made it to the Green Sand Beach. If you do decide to hike there, be prepared. Bring plenty of water with you. There is nothing around that area. No bathrooms, water, etc. We did speak to some people who had gone and they said it was ok, but don't expect to see "green" sand. Have a great trip! The Big Island is fabulous. Make sure you set aside plenty of time for Volcanoes National park.
