Is the Grand Canyon worth seeing?

Hi, I'm wondering if the grand canyon is worth seeing. I will be a couple hours away from there next week and wondering if its a fun time or if its boring.

Thanks

JackOneill Apr 22nd, 2003 09:31 AM

Well, it depends. Were you just planning on driving to the South (or North) Rim, parking your car, walking out and looking over the edge, then hopping back into your car and leaving? If so, then I'd say it'd probably be pretty boring.

toddruggy Apr 22nd, 2003 09:32 AM

Well I don't know.. We're up for anything. We'll be in Arizona for a week and were thinking about driving down.

nina Apr 22nd, 2003 09:35 AM

Tod. Are you kidding? Read my trip report.

DixieChick Apr 22nd, 2003 09:40 AM

No offense but is this question a joke? This is one of the greatest natural wonders in the world.

elberko Apr 22nd, 2003 09:42 AM

If you have to ask, the answer is probably no.

RachelG Apr 22nd, 2003 09:42 AM

The Grand Canyon is awesome, wonderful, incredible. Everyone should see it at least once in their life. I prefer North Rim over South, but either is great.

OliveOyl Apr 22nd, 2003 09:43 AM

Yikes..........

FainaAgain Apr 22nd, 2003 09:45 AM

Hey, the trolls are back! Who said the registration will eliminate them?

kkj Apr 22nd, 2003 09:49 AM

Are you for real? If this is a troll find something else to do with your time. If not, well let's see the Grand Canyon is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. Do you think maybe it might be worth a couple of hours of your time? If not, then why not just go to a shopping mall where you are visiting and then proceed to tell everyone how you like to travel.

suzanne Apr 22nd, 2003 02:41 PM

Todd, it's one HELL of party. Booze, strippers, gambling...

ALF Apr 22nd, 2003 03:18 PM

For most people in this world, the answer is unquestionably, yes. For Todd, the answer is undoubtedly, no.

OliveOyl Apr 22nd, 2003 03:39 PM

I LOVE this thread!! :LOL

CAPS_LOCK_WIZARD Apr 22nd, 2003 05:26 PM

SKIP THE CANYON AND GO GAMBLING ON ONE OF THE INDIAN RESERVATIONS. AT LEAST YOU MIGHT WALK AWAY WITH SOMETHING MORE THAN A SUNBURN AND A SORE ASS (FROM THE DONKEY RIDE).

Pumpy Apr 22nd, 2003 05:33 PM

It's nothing but a big hole in the ground! And besides, there are six other wonders of the world to see.

bob_brown Apr 22nd, 2003 07:31 PM

You know I have been wondering about that same question for a long time. I keep going to the Grand Canyon trying to figure out the answer. I must have been there 6 times or more. We once tried going to both rims on the same trip to see what the answer was. We never could figure it out, so I think I will go back again and see if I can discover any more answers. The place is so large I just can't seem to see enough on one visit to make a decision.
I will keep trying; maybe one day I will decide after another 2 or 3 trips.

bbib Apr 22nd, 2003 10:59 PM

Oh dear Toddruggy, have you not ever seen any pictures of the Grand Canyon or TV clips, if not check them out and you decide.

I sure hope its worth seeing. ten years dreaming. Five months planning. And only six days til I'm on my way to drop my jaw at this baby!!

stragic Apr 22nd, 2003 11:13 PM

I've been to both the North and South rim and honestly was not awestruck or inspired. Maybe if I had camped there, taken a mule ride, or done more than just look at it I'd feel differently. To me, the Grand Canyon was just one of those things you have to see if you're close by but in the end I think Grand Tetons, Banff and Jasper, Yellowstone, Crater Lake are more awe-inspiring (IMO).

gail Apr 23rd, 2003 12:02 AM

Skip it - if you have a few hours, you can probably fly to New Jersey instead - be sure to see Hoboken and Seacaucus - not to be missed.

doc_ Apr 23rd, 2003 03:35 AM

ROTFLMAO..If you have to ask, stay home and rent the movie.

gc Apr 23rd, 2003 03:46 AM

Troll...

I think the name is really too druggy

If you have to ask how much, you can't afford it.
If you have to ask if it's worth it, it isn't.

Leona Apr 23rd, 2003 05:38 AM

I think you're all being too hard on Toddruggy. We have visited the Canyon twice and on one visit, stayed in a hotel on the rim. The sunset was simply incredible.

It's apparent that Toddruggy has better things to do with his time and should probably stay away.

patthegreat Apr 23rd, 2003 07:20 AM

Nina, how does one find your trip report? Thanks.

E Apr 23rd, 2003 07:39 AM

Suzanne, you are hysterical! I, too, love this thread--a classic troll post.

elberko Apr 23rd, 2003 07:46 AM

patthegreat, click on nina's name and all her posts will show-up.

patthegreat Apr 23rd, 2003 08:10 AM

Thanks, you can tell I'm new at this. Have read lots of interesting stuff already.

GoTravel Apr 23rd, 2003 08:16 AM

The Grand Canyon is a myth.

nina Apr 23rd, 2003 11:44 AM

Tod druggy,
Chill. I understand that if you manage to score some wild peyote prior to viewing the canyon, that you will most definitely not be bored. Have a great trip.

GoTravel Apr 23rd, 2003 11:54 AM

toddruggy, this quote is from your original post----> "Hi, I'm wondering if the grand canyon is worth seeing."

Nowhere in your post did you ask if people LIKED the Grand Canyon.

If you read the title to your post you will see how stupid the question seems to be.

As for your coworker calling the Grand Canyon dumb, it would be similar to calling your heading smart.

Austin Apr 23rd, 2003 11:58 AM

Todd- personally, I didn't doubt the authenticity of your question - I checked your other inquiries and saw you were headed to Arizona so I figured that is why you'll be a "couple of hours away".

In any event, the reason everyone thinks you are a troll is because most people will tell you that the GC is one of the most awe-inspiring places on the face of the earth, and for someone to ask if it's "worth it" is almost (okay it is) laughable.

I don't think anyone has ever seen the words "dumb" and Grand Canyon" in the same conversation. Your co-worker most likely suffers from room-temperature IQ and I suggest if you wish to be upwardly mobile at your place of work, you avoid him like the plaque.

muffin Apr 23rd, 2003 12:14 PM

I would rather go to Las Vegas and go to the Desert Passage Mall. I did see the Grand canyon from our airplane and that was cool, but, it was enough nature for me.

gkins Apr 23rd, 2003 01:11 PM

In a word "YES". Go and see it. Don't worry about some of these ridiculous replies. Some people have too much time on their hands. I hope I spelled RIDICULOUS correctly or I'll get a lot of ridicule from others. Enjoy your trip and enjoy the Grand Canyon.

JungleCat Apr 23rd, 2003 01:19 PM

Gail, I'm disappointed in your suggestion. A 90 mile an hour trip down filthy Rt 46 with people entering and exiting strip-malls in front of you is much more exhilarating than some nearly dried out river bed out west.

utahtea Apr 23rd, 2003 06:25 PM

I was in Arches National Park and overheard a lady say "if you've seen one arch you've seen them all". I don't know her but I do know that her and have opposite opinions on the subject.

I love seeing new arches and I love going back and seeing the ones I already have seen. That lady will never be back.

It's hard to say what one person will like and another won't like.

I would venture to guess if you like beauiful natural scenic areas then it won't be a waste of time. There isn't a picture yet that I have seen that does the Grand Canyon justice.
