Is the east coast of Wisconsin similar to the west coast of Michigan?

We have never been to Wisconsin and are attending a wedding in the north in Marinette. Instead of driving back up and through Michigan we intend to continue down through Wisconsin along Lake Michigan, through Chicago and back to the Detroit area. I know virtually nothing about this drive. We are four adults who love the water, nature, the arts and good restaurants. We love the whole western coast of Michigan and its arty vibe: Traverse City, Saugatuck, etc. Can you suggest some similar stops for us on the Wisconsin side? We will take three days for the drive with our last night being in Chicago.

Although it isn't exactly on the way from Marinette to Chicago, Door County has what you're looking for. Milwaukee has an excellent art museum, a beautiful lakefront, and lots of good restaurants.

I have read a bit about Door County. Are there any specific recommendations? And Milwaukee does look interesting.

This is our first visit to Wisconsin. We'll head south from Menominee, Mi and have reservations for one night at County Clare Irish Pub and Guesthouse in Milwaukee. Looking forward to the drive along the way. We will probably look for a good local cheese producer. Any thoughts?

A drive through Door County will remind you of New England - lots of artists - it is a little tourise - one stop you should make is in Cedarburg just north of Milwaukee - you will enjoy it. It is a very unique city -- lots of nice little shops - wine and cheese - and of course in Milwaukee you must take in the Art Museum and watch the wings open and close - Downtown is also the Harley Museum -- and I am not sure you considered it -- but their is ferry that runs from Milwaukee to Michigan - it would save you driving through Chicago.

Thank Ronko! Will definitely check out those suggestions. We are deliberately driving through Chicago to spend one night there as well. The ferry is a great suggestion for perhaps another time.

Door County is Lovely. Try a Fish Boil at the White Gull in in Fish Creek or the Viking in Ephraim. Great dinners at the Whistling Swan in Fish Creek too.
Breakfast at Al Johnson's in Fish creek (the goats on the roof Swedish restaurant. (try the swedish pancakes with Ligonberries.)
Dinner at the Blue Front Cafe in Sturgeon bay is great
Breakfast at Scaturo's bakery and restaurant...best french toast in the world.
Lots of gift shops and touristy things to do. Golf or bike in the state park. Take in a play at Penninsula Players, or the American Follklore theatre.
It is a fun time. Visit both sides of Door County, the Bay side and the lake side with it's crashing waves.
if you are driving up from Milwuakee, stop in Sheyboygan for a Brat.

Door County is lovely, one of our favorites was Fish Creek and Egg Harbor. If you are driving thru Chicago, Washington Park in Michigan City has a lovely beach and catwalk and marina. No place to really stay except the Blue Chip Casino or continue on to other harbor towns of New Buffalo or South Haven before going east to Detroit.
