Is San Diego Calif. warm in January?
Hi
Is San Diego warm in January? How warm? Beach weather? Is San Diego a walking city? Or is there someplace nice in California further south? (This is for a one week vacation in January - and I just can't seem to find the right place in the Caribbean) I live in NYC and I crave beach and someplace warm, but I guess I have to have that culture! Any suggestions? Thanks. |
January can be very rainy in California. December has seen nights near 35 degrees and days in the 50's, perhaps this is an unusually cold winter.
Palm Springs is warm in January, but it's a long way from the beach! How about St. Thomas? |
It's hard to say what the weather will be like in January. This month already we've had the coldest temperatures on record and, today, some records were set for heat! It has been much cooler than usual for the last month or so.
If the air is warm, the beach would be pleasant for sitting or walking, but not swimming. The water is cold. You can't go much further south in California than San Diego. It will be much warmer that NYC - probably - but may not be just what you're looking for. |
September and October are the best weather wise.

I am from SD originally and now live on the East Coast. I would not visit in Jan. if beach weather is what you are seeking. SD is a great town to visit. I was home last March for a visit and even then it was not close to beach weather. If staying in the U.S is your choice looks like Florida is the only answer. I would check into Playa del Carmen area if the Caribbean holds no interest for you.

often, there's a week in early January when the weather here is just perfect. But you can't count on it!
I second the Playa del Carmen idea! Great walking around town, great beach! |
South of Sand Diego is Mexico. Yes, it can be warmer there in January, in Southern Mexico!!!

Also, this is an El nino year, so we're getting more rain. This weekend was nice and warm. Very welcome after 2 weeks of cold weather. It was actually 32 degrees one morning at the Oceanside Airport. I had to scrape the frost off of my car. And I threw away my snow scraper when I moved here from CT thinking I'd never need it again.
