Is San Diego Airport Car Rental Shuttle really 24/7?

Been to SD zillions of times but NEVER had to drop off rental car to catch 6:30 a.m. flight; I will only have carry-on, returning via Alaskan Air. So I'd have to leave Carlsbad by 5 a.m., arriving at rental complex by 5:30 Sunday morning, which SHOULD be ok, if the shuttle is running 24/7 as stated. BUT does it come with less frequency at certain times; weekends, before 6 a.m., etc. Can't afford to miss this flight. Your experiences, please!

If you can't afford to miss the flight, I'd suggest you leave Carlsbad a heck of a lot before 5 am for a 6:30 am flight! (I would leave then if I were taking a taxi, or getting dropped off at the terminal, but it seems really tight with returning the car)

You and thousands of other passengers all will be on flights that depart in the 6 to 7am hour. There are a total of 30 to 40 flights that depart SAN between 6 & 7.

You need to allow for extra time to get through security with that morning rush, as everybody and their kids has the same idea as you - arrive at SAN just in time.

We've only done San Diego car rental a couple of times, but it has taken longer than most other airports to go from the car rental to the airport terminal. Personally, if it were me, I'd be dropping my car off no later than 4:30am at that location and leaving Carlsbad by 3:30-3:45. But I always plan for security delays at the airport, so I would not want to be at TSA any later than 5:00

Sudlick and J62 are right -- that is a very busy time for flights.

Not only will the airport be pretty busy, there will likely be several people dropping off cars so there may be a delay there too.

The airport authority has advised me via email (had checked their website about Rental Car Center/Shuttles) that the shuttles come by constantly, and estimated 5 minute wait; that is good. Never had trouble leaving SD, and the 5 Fwy at that hour in the morning will be a breeze, 30 min. max. (But still might drop off car Saturday afternoon and come back via light rail, son can drive me down at 5:00 a.m.!) Thanks all-

If you are comfortable and have left at 5 am to catch flights at that time then hopefully you will be ok.

I too would be leaving a whole lot earlier. I just did a Google search, which said to allow 52 minutes from Carlsbad to the SD airport and 1 hr 19 by train.

Maybe less time way early in the morning, but it is 35 miles to the airport, so unless you are driving over the speed limit with no morning commuter traffic,30 minutes plus dropping off a car seems risky.

Every time we go to San Diego it seems like there is a lot more traffic.

Put aside the driving time which you can calculate yourself knowing your exact staring point.

We are warning you that showing up at the security line at 5:30am for a 6:30am flight is a recipe for disaster. You may get lucky, but you may not.

On a Sunday morning that early, the 5 will be relatively quiet and a quick run to the airport. However, once you reach the airport, I agree with everyone else that you'll need more time than you are allowing.
