Is Raleigh, NC manageable without a car?

I got a good job offer in Raleigh but the problem is I don't have a driver's license as I always lived in NYC. How hard is it to get around without a car until I get my license?

Raleigh is really spread out and it would be kind of impossible to get around without one.

I couldn't imagine trying to get around Raleigh without a car, unless you're really close to work and the places you need to shop. The bus system is pretty lame, and the city is sprawling (especially outside the Beltline). If you're a cyclist, you might be able to manage for awhile.

A big pain if you don't have a car. Don's post is very helpful.

There are many, many people with driver's license who don't know how to drive! And of course, there are people with revoked licenses who drive anyway.

Raleigh: don't even think about it without a car!

If you are used to NYC, I would *highly* suggest you visit Raleigh before moving there! I live in Portland, Oregon, and even I found Raleigh incredibily smallish and unexciting compared to Portland. Then again, some people like suburban living and don't really need to live in a "city".

Andrew
