is New Orleans City Park (area) safe?

My partner and I will be visiting New Orleans next weekend. Among other things, we're going to be volunteering at the Hogs for the Cause cook off. The event is held in the middle of City Park near the rugby field and we'll be going there Sat around noon until about 8. We'll probably take a cab from our CBD hotel (and hopefully can get one back).

Is the park in a safe area? We've been to New Orleans many times and know how the neighborhoods can change from one block to the next. we're from Miami, so we're very aware, but I'd feel better if we knew something about this park.

thanks!

Looks like a very nice large park. At the SE end of the park is South Carrolton Street which is the end of a spur of the Canal Street Streetcar line. After 7:45PM the frequency of streetcars gets longer. up until then it should be 15-20 minutes.

The streetcar will save you a lot of money vs. taxis.
Not familiar with CBD. I'm more familiar with French Quarter and Garden Quarter and St. Charles Streetcar.

Yes it is a safe area. In fact there is a children's amusement park and several wedding venues in the park so there will be people around into the evening. I would cab it back to your hotel- the streetcar can be a long ride. If you take one to the park you may be able to arrange for a pickup later in the day from the same company.
I live 5 minutes away from the park. You are smart to ask b/c the city can change street by street! But just use common sense and you'll be fine!
Thank you for visiting and for volunteering!

Thank you both!. We love it there and visit at least every other year. We're always looking for local's food recommendations on non-tourist spots. I'm a personal chef, so we always seek out special spots. Any price point, low or high, any dress, any cuisine is fine. Any faves you'd like to share?
