Is Masa's (SF) worth it?
I'm going to be in San Francisco for Christmas and wanted a splurge. I've heard Masa's is good, but is it worth the money?

Hi Debra:

My wife and I were served one of the best meals we've ever eaten at Masa's. The place is small and in somewhat of an obscure location but it is definately worth a visit.

We also at at Aqua while in SF and though the food was good, the dining experience was lousy. The tables are too close and the place is extremely loud.

We at the at the White Barn in Kennebunk in May and Masa's beats it hands down.

Go to Masa's you won't regret it.

Regards,

RM

Masa's at Christmas time should be wonderful. It's certainly a traditional restaurant which makes you feel pampered and comfortable when the weather is cool. The food is good, service is good, there's nothing outstanding to make it a "hot" place. I would recommend it. The above poster who reported on Aqua should see it now after the fall of the dot commers. Masa's is pretty and traditionally French. Enjoy.

A couple other suggestions:Ovation at the Inn at the Opera is a very small dining room but is extremely lovely at Christmastime, also Jardiniere over by the opera house/symphony hall is great and cozy in winter.

If you can do one luxury restaurant while in San Francisco, make it Masa's; total dinning experience. Try the tasting menu; a number of courses of what amount to "small plates" with accompanying wines. Outstanding!

Agree about Aqua. Interesting, but over-rated.

Thanks for the advice. I plan to do the six course tasting menu, which sounds really good.
