Is Les Mis still playing in Broadway?
 

I'll be in NY this September. I've always wanted to see Les Miserables. Is it still playing? If not, what's the best alternative?

No it closed last year. Hard to get tickets to the more popular shows.

Too bad. Will look at Lion King, Beauty and the beast or Spamalot then

You probably won't be able to get tickets to Spamalot unless you use a broker and pay broker prices. Still the hottest ticket in NY.

Also, if you're looking to buy discount tickets, check "Broadway Grosses" in the news section of Playbill. The shows with low attendance percentages are the ones most likely to offer seats through the Tkts Booths.

Will try. With everything booked, I might end up spending the night in my hotel room :(

Certainly not everything is booked for September. If your first choices are sold out, experiment a little. There's plenty of good theater to be seen in NYC, beyond just the top few shows. ;)

If you want more theater reviews from this site, I know there have been plenty. Try the search box up top (it can be flaky, but still is somewhat useful).

We'll see. What can I say about NY? Even the preparation is stressful. Huh. Can't wait to get there. Tough because we plan to watch a yankee game, a broadway show, see Liberty, see the empire state, time square, central park, madison square, st. patrick, ground zero, chinatown. It's easier to work on an itinerary for vegas.

Well, why don't you forget the broadway show and try either Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, or one of the many delicious off-broadway shows? Some of those are excellent. Fran's Bed will be playing at Playwrights Horizons on 42nd St. through September. Starring Mia Farrow and Julia Stiles. Get tickets NOW though.

September is a bit slower in tourism in the city, so you should not have any problems finding something on Broadway to see.

I suggest NOT waiting in line at TKTS in Times Square, instead go to the TKTS booth down at the South St. Seaport. It opens at 10am, I think and there are usually short lines there. The tickets are the same as they sell at the TS booth, but you can get them much earlier. This is where NYers go to get tickets.

After that walk up to Chinatown for Dim Sum and then a bit of shopping.

TKTS now has a separate line (#6, I think) for straight plays, and that line moves very, very quickly.

Appreciate all your input. There are so many things to do then. Off-Broadway, Broadway...looking forward to the dimsum too. I'll certainly bring your tips with me.

If you're looking for a grand, epic, kind of musical, think about Phantom of the Opera. It is still playing to capacity crowds right now, as is Lion King.
Today's New York Times, available on line, has an article about how well Broadway is doing this summer, no typical summer slowdown.

If it is still playing this September, I fell in love with "The Light in the Piazza" at Lincoln Center theatre.
Gorgeous music, sets, costumes, and actors.

Actually Elaine, Phantom's one of the considerations. As citylghts suggested, I checked Playbill andthey still have good seats. At times though I think about watching something I'm not familiar with. I think I've memorized every single line in the Phantom Opera.

If you are already familiar with Phantom, then I'll again suggest Light I T Piazza.If you like, watch the old film with Olivia DeHaviland (TCM shows it occasionally on tv). IT's a charming story, the show not big and splashy like Phantom, but beautifully done imo.
