Melissa - maybe leave by 12:30, latest. When the TPK backs up, it is usually around 7 or 8, and you don't want to waste time down in that area, especially if there are extra check points at the tunnels, etc. Check the traffic reports in the morning. Remember, sometimes Port Authority police spontaneously detain traffic if something looks suspicious, and traffic will back up in no time. However, as a driving day, in general, I think you will have it pretty easy on your way up. I would keep checking the traffic reports, though, and plan accordingly. Enjoy the show!

Not to sound complacent or cynical or whatever - but our officials can't tell us where the terrorists will strike nor when.
Is this situation any different from before, regardless of the color of the alert?
We always knew that there is going to be another terrorist attack, so let's just keep on living as before. All we can do is to swivel our heads more and be more suspicious of our - probably - innocent neighbors!
Enjoy the holidays! and Merry Christmas to all! The very celebration of life is a defeat for the terrorists!

Naturally, you have to live with your decision and any results of that decision, but really, I think the odds of getting caught in terrorist activity are still much lower than the odds of getting killed in a car accident in the cab on the freeway going to the airport.
I seem to have a knack for traveling during alerts. I had a trip planned to NY just weeks after 9-11, a trip to London when we went to war and have a flight booked to LA for Saturday (I saw LA mentioned as a possible target on the news last night) and didn't cancel any of those trips. You're probably safer since security is increased. On a practical level, the worst part is that everything will take longer due to security checks, etc.
Have fun

Today in NYC you will have to pay special attention to increased size of puddles, heavy amounts of rain, crowds and panicked shoppers who just remembered Aunt Mildred, housewives all over town hunting for that missing ingredient, husbands sweating bullets cuz they forgot what size the wife wears, it is a tense time in the city these days..
Happy Holidays Scarlett~
