Well 40 people think that Hannibal is definitely worth a visit.....

Cahokia is very easy to get to from St. Louis, as its just across the river off of interstate 55/70....I passed it everyday on my way to work! The area around Cahokia mounds is a little off-putting, to say the least, but don't let it keep you from visiting because the mounds are definitely worth visiting.

I don't want to keep you from going to Hannibal. Its not my favorite place, and I got bored after about four hours, but different strokes for different folks as they say! If you are interested then go for it!

LN, hence the "imo" that was put at the end of my statement. There really was no need to count how many people liked it; we are all entitled to our own opinions, and every comment made on these boards are based on personal opinions. As I just mentioned to faina above, I wouldn't tell her not to visit just because I didn't care for it.

Hi FainaAgain:

I think I "saw" you in an Elderhostel discussion about St. Louis. I mentioned having been to an EH there years ago. Do hope you will get to the Art Museum in lovely Forest Park. Not so sure about the Arch which has had trams stalled halfway up recently! Has no one mentioned the Museum of Transportation, St. Louis Zoo, Missouri Botanical Gardens...all definitely on my list of top choices. Of course, there is a Cardinal game and Italian dining on the Hill and more.

As for touring the state, this thread already has included much that I'd recommend, like Hannibal, Ste. Genevieve, St. Charles, Mansfield (Wilder House down I-44 almost to Spfld)...no big deal in each but each definitely worth a day.

Some places not mentioned however: Daniel Boone Home and also Onondaga Cave both fairly near St. Louis. Midstate is Arrow Rock, a quaint little town. Or come on down to Springfield to see Bass Pro shop, etc. Caution about Johnson Shutins...still
recovering from flooding due to a disastrous dam break.

Enjoy Missouri...ozarksbill

Ozark, the EH program is the "art in St Louis" visiting the art museum and many other places.

For our post-program time we're going out. Cahokia, Trail of Tears, Ste Genevieve is on our list.

Then, the other direction. Hannibal, Hermann.

The search is not working, this 2004 thread is the latest I was able to pull up :))
