Is Fairbanks worth it?

I'm working with a tour operator in Alaska who is advising me to skip Fairbanks. She says we can go panning for gold at Katishna, and the rest is pretty ho-hum. Apparently she used to live in Fairbanks and was not impressed. I'd welcome other opinions.

Hi Athena-
I've been to Fairbanks many, many times to visit relatives. I agree with your tour operator... skip it! Not much to see or do there, in my opinion.

I'll third that statement. Unless you're heading north of Fairbanks on the Dalton Hiway, there's absolutely no reason to go there other than to say you've been there. The Alaskaland Park and the city center are nice, but, very simply, not worth the effort to go there.

The Univ of Alaska museum in Fairbanks is excellent but not worth the trip. Alaska is huge and your time could be better spent elsewhere.

I think she might have a "past" in Fairbands. Maybe she got it on with a few too many tour folks. Too ho-hum? Think she added the hum?

Went to Fairbanks last summer and really enjoyed it. It is a long way from Denali, sot that might enter into your decision.

We enjoyed the museum at the U of A. ALso went to the special program they put on - it was two parts - Indian Athletics and NOrhtern Lights. Excellent!

Took the El Dorado Gold Mine Tour Lots of fun, and the Discovery Riverboat trip, also very enjoyable.
