Is Charleston Worth it?
 

I am thinking of going out of my way (on a trip South) and stopping in Charleston, South Carolina for a couple of days. <BR>In doing a net search for info and lodging I am not finding too much...in fact Fodors seems to have the most complete info. <BR>Lodging seems very expensive...I get the impression that it is over rated. <BR>Is it worth stopping and paying over $100 a night? <BR>Any thoughts?

Absolutely. Charleston is so beautiful, full of charm, great restaurants, good shopping, wonderful architecture. Voted #3 in Conde Naste "best places to vacation" behind San Francisco and New Orleans. <BR> <BR>If you are driving down 95 it's not too far out of the way, nor is Savannah. See them both--many similarities in the two cities but Charleston is more "citified" than Savannah with her squares. You can probably find places to stay in both cities for under $100, but it is well worth any extra to stay in the historic district of both cities. Both have upscale hotels but IMHO, B&Bs are the way to go--all located in historic homes. Hope you'll make the side trip--I don't think you'll be sorry you did.

Absolutely! Charleston is one of my favorite places to visit. It's certainly worth spending the money to stay in town where you walk and forget about the car. There are some chain motels in the town area, but I don't know how much they charge.

Charleston is an utterly wonderful city, have been twice, great Plantation homes to visit, wonderful restaurants; you won't want to leave! You can stay at the Hampton Inn in the Historic district, right across from the Visitor's Center & Shuttles, for less than $100, using a AAA or AARP card, etc. Very nice, but it's right on the fringe of the historic area so you will need to take advantage of the free shuttles. The food alone is worth visitng for!!!

If you enjoy walking and love old homes - lovingly restored, then Charleston is the place for you! It's a visual feast -block after block after block of wonderful buildings, many from the 18th centure and some even earlier. There's a walking guide available - it's only about $6 and a great investment...really helps you know what you are looking at, as you amble along. There's a Customs HOuse tour which is very worthwhile, and the guidebook is available in their little shop. Great food, as has been noted..and I second the poster who said,' try to see Savannah as well.'

Cedar: It is definitely worth it. A nice place to stay with reasonable rates in the historic district is the HarbourView Inn. It is a newer hotel but very well-located, walking distance to everything, and has water views. Call them and ask if they have any discounted rates -- we stayed there last December for a little over $100 per night including afternoon wine & cheese and a delicious continental breakfast delivered to the room the next morning. They have a website but I can't remember the address at the moment.
