Is Charleston walkable?

We are planning a trip to the Southeast this Spring, arriving in Charleston, where we will be spending 2-3 days before moving on.

Question is will we need a car for touring Charleston, or can we save a few days rental by getting a car when we're ready to leave the city?

Do the hotels in the historic area provide airport shuttle service?

Thanks.

BarryK.... I live 40 miles North of CHS and my wife and I go all the time....It depends on where you are staying ?? If yo are staying d'twn then the answer is yes !! CHS is a great walking city (parking is a drag sometimes) .....the hotels do provide transfer to/from airport

We stayed at the Renaissance Charleston (downtown, got a great price through Priceline) for 3 nights. We parked the car when we got there, walked all over, and got back in the car when we left. So the answer is YES.

Do you do Priceline?((*))

Hi BarryK, a friend and I went to Charleston spring of 2005. We had our hotel valet park our car when we checked into the hotel and never used it until we checked out of the hotel. Charleston is a very walkable city. We stayed in the historical area and that is where we did all of our walking.

We also stayed at the Renaissance and didn't touch our car while we were there. We love to walk, especially in cities we've never visited before, and Charleston is perfect for that. We walked down the battery, around the historic district, up and down King Street - really, a wonderful walking town.

Thanks all.

Jed - have never done Priceline because it's always been more than 2 of us, but this time the kids aren't going, so we may give it a try.

Hi BarryK, I just want to also say that my friend and I walked around the historical center quite late at night and we two women felt very safe. That was another plus! Charleston is a beautiful historical city and I found the residents to be very gracious and welcoming.

BarryK, while you are in Charleston take the Gullah Tour to get a great view of the city and learn some very interesting aspects of its history. Have a great visit. Beautiful city!
