Is Catalina Island Dead at Night?
Thinking of spending a weekend on the island, but would like to listen to a band/D.J. and go dancing. Is this available on Catalina or should we make it a day trip and spend the night elsewhere...in San Pedro,Dana Point, etc?

There is plenty do do on summer weekends. There are bars, Kareoke, and bands at the Descanso Beach Club. Check out SC Chamber for the latest.

I went to Catalina last summer and found it to be rather dull overall. To be honest I would not recommend it to anybody. I don't see what all the whoopha is.

natalie wood thought so.

Luau Larry's often has live music on the weekends.

We are taking the kids (teen-age) along and thought we could find a mixture of daytime activities for them, along with a little dancing for us at night. Any opinions on whether we should reconsider and stay someplace else in Southern CA?

You mentioned a very good reason to choose Catalina! I always liked knowing where the kids were. The teenagers tend to sit along the boardwalk or at the arcade at night. There are very few cars in the island and I pretty much knew where they were even if we decided to have an expresso or stay at the Descanso Beach club, you knew the kids were hanging out talking on "the wall".

San Diego is always a good choice for families. But I'm not sure how I'd feel about my kids running around on their own at night, while my husband and I are off dancing. Catalina would be a safer and more confined location.

I was there once on 4th of July and the town was really hopping! They closed the streets to automobiles, several live bands and fun people everywhere, no one had to worry about getting a DUI....maybe just because this was a holiday?? Anyway, I enjoyed my one and only time there immensly. Mark

Mark: Are you talking about San Diego? There are no cars on Catalina Island, so you must be discussing one of the street fairs in San Diego.
