Is Cambridge Non-Smoking too?
 

I know that Boston is anti-smoking, but I was wondering if that also applies to places like Cambridge and Somerville as well.

I hope it does ... I am not prejudice against smokers, I am just really allergic to it myself.

I will be visiting in late May. I am so excited, I can't wait!!!

LOL, the People's Republic of Cambridge is one of the nonsmokingest places in the world.

I have no idea what that is ... anyway, it was a serious question.

Wallace, I'm sorry that my reply seemed sarcastic. Locals use that name for Cambridge because of its academic super-liberal politics. Of course such a community has the most severe restrictions on smoking. They do not permit smoking in any place of employment -- including retaurants and bars.

Thank you Mr. Anonymous for caring enough to send me that reply :D Since you appear to be a local, any advice for me on where to go etc. I think I will be in Cambridge more than Boston (though non-locals do consider them to be the same place if you know what I mean)
I am female, early 30's and don't care much for clubbing (and definitely couldn't care less about politics)... and always travel solo (just to help you with the recommendations) THANKS in advance :)

I wish I could help, but I'm quite out of touch with my early 30s -- I have a daughter who's older than that!

Anonymous - I thought all of Massachusetts was non-smoking in any workplace (including bars and restaurants). I don't smoke so I can't remember exactly what the law is these days. You can still smoke in NH.

All of Massachusetts is now smoke-free in the workplace, as of last year. That includes restaurants and bars, with the exception, I believe, of cigar bars. I've never been a smoker either but I followed the legislation carefully so I would know when it was safe to visit my favorite local live music venue without coming out smelling like an ashtray.

If you let us know your interests perhaps we can give you some suggestions for things to do in Cambridge.

I just listed the things I don't like because it was easier ... I am pretty much up for anything, but I am afraid I am older than my years. I don't like staying out very late - I don't go clubbing or anything like that ... but I do enjoy music very much. (Just not very loud ... I am very noise sensitive due to illness.)... LOL! I am not that much of a BORE!

I was really hoping to just hang out. Go to the bookstores etc. and do window shopping. I definitely want to go to the MIT museum... things like that.

I am in California and we have similar laws banning smoking in restaurants and bars, and I think it's great.

sharona - I totally hear you about coming home from a concert or someplace smelling like an ashtray. That used to be a major draw back of going out.
