Is Atlantic City really THAT bad?

We're thinking of a few days in AC in December. We love Vegas but we're on the east coast and AC would certainly be cheaper. However, all the info we've read is about how it's run down, unsafe, and "definitely NOT Vegas". Is it really that terrible, or is it worth a visit?

Yes, AC is rundown, and has some unsafe areas, but it is great fun. The Boardwalk area with the casinos is just fine. I love AC and never had a problem there. Just keep in mind that no, it isn't Vegas.
Keep in mind that you will not be able to enjoy the boardwalk and all the sites it allows of the different casinos because of the time of year you are going. There's not much more to do in AC other than gambling, so if tha's all your looking for you should have a good time.
I love Las Vegas too. I was in AC last June. If gambling is what you're interested in, AC is okay. No sports betting though, a big disappointment for me. Plenty of slots. Not much else to do there. It will be pretty cold in December so you won't want to walk the boardwalk. It is run down, it is unsafe. Not much else to do there. Splurge for the airfare and go to Las Vegas. Cut back on the gambling fund a bit if necessary. Unless you just need a slot machine fix, go to Vegas.

AC isn't LV because it doesn't have all of the entertainment that goes with the gaming. It does have the boardwalk, but not in Decemeber. Most of the city is not at all safe, but to/from the casinos isn't that bad.

If it were me and you couldn't afford to go to LV, but AC is in range --- have you considered Foxwoods or Mohigan casinos in CT? Definitely more out side things to keep you entertained. (just don't expect them to be right at the hotel, there are lots to do within a half hours drive)

There is no place on the face of the earth that begins to compare with Las Vegas. Try to see if you can find a special package deal to Las Vegas. Often you can find some pretty good deals. The first 3 weeks of December is the slowest time of the year. Many of the hotels offer free nights to their non-comped customers. I bet you could find some real attractive packages if you are traveling during the first three weeks. If you plan on the Christmas-New Years week then forget it. It will be packed with no deals available.
I would rather go have a root canal than go to Atlantic City. Avoid it. Vegas and AC are worlds apart.

If you're in a city through which Southwest flies, get a package with them. They have incredible deals, especially if you go mid-week.
www.southwestvacations.com
