I met Peter Greenberg at a travel show in Las Vegas (ironic) and asked him why he wasn't doing as much on the Travel Channel any longer. Anyone remember when he and that brunette chick from the between show ads had that 30 minute daily travel show? Anyway, he told me that he has contracted with the Travel Channel to do six specials a year for them. The first one was about the King of Jordan and the country of Jordan. I can't remember what the second was the the plane crash thingy was the fourth.

What a great post. Glad to know I am not alone.

Why the hell is Vegas Week on? Why do we need a special Vegas Week? Every damn show is on Vegas and their secrets. Has anyone ever profited from their secrets? Might be worth seeing a show called "How I got rich watching Vegas Shows on the Travel Channel 24/7."

Although I find the Las Vegas infomercials unappealling, I am even more perturbed when they have shows on that are clearly leftover from the Discovery Channel and not remotely related to travel. Why do they bother!?

I have found that FineLiving network does offer some decent travel shows. Not great, but better than the Travel Channel.

Does anybody remember the show "Travelers"? I loved this show about 3 youngish people who did an hour show on some well known place or sometimes some obscure place. It was a really good travel show that I have not seen in a while.

The travel channel up until about a year ago still showed the Travelers in the afternoons. I think another channel shows it now.

The Style Channel has some great travel shows.

"Travelers" is still on -- very early in the morning on certain days! But I'll take Samantha Brown over those 3 jerks ANY time!!

[email protected]: I wish I had the kind of time you have to watch TV. What time I do have, I like to travel. How many weeks of TV time does your job allow? I hear the average US worker only gets less than 2 hours of TV and uncensored internet time a day. I am self-employed and any time I spend comes right off the top--my paycheck. Gosh I am envious of you!

Green-I agree.. about the time off..and It takes every penney for me to save it up too!
I havent seen the Las Vegas thing..but the Food Network also shows great places on their travels..enjoy the hosts and seeing where they go and all the eateries:)

Lonely Plant was excellent and I watch the reruns whenever I run across them. Ian was the best. I also remember one episode where the host was an Australian guy, tall dark hair and hunky as hell. Traveled though India. Anyone remember who he was?

Now the Travel Channel website has a section devoted exclusively to Samantha Brown. You just wouldn't believe some of the comments posted to the discussion board portion! I mean -- WHO CARES?!?!!

pisser Jan 14th, 2003 05:22 AM

The Travel Channel has reached a new low. I checked it out this past weekend and lo and behold there it was the absolute stupidest travel show imaginable "The ten best bathrooms in Vegas"!! I kid you not there was a show about Vegas toilets. There must be a challenge to see how low this channel can sink.

Jackie Jan 14th, 2003 07:03 AM

I did love Conde Nast's Amazing destinations. Have to also admit that I like Samantha Brown, I guess she kinda grew on me. I also like some of the Ten Best Shows, but some are really lame.

I really get annoyed at all the haunted this and haunted that, I mean there is a scifi channel for that crap. Other than that, it's a real shame this channel could have so much potential.

On subject of TV travel programs, A&E is starting a series called Best of Both Worlds on Friday nights. Idea is two people go to a place, one stays in luxury, the other roughs it. Might be interesting, first one this Friday - Hong Kong, second 1/24 Hawaii.

dumb-dumb Jan 14th, 2003 08:48 AM

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall at one of the Travel Channel's programming meetings? What fool comes up with the ideas they pass off as "travel topics"?
You can also see Rick Steves' "Travels in Europe" on PBS, although in my area it's often shown rather late in the evenings.

BTW, was anyone else surprised that his voice and mannerisms seem a tad gay? Did not get this at all from his books and was shocked the first time I saw him on T.V. Lots of limp wrist action.

hoppy Jan 14th, 2003 10:29 AM

Rick Steves is a big geek. What a nerd. He sounds like kermit the frog.

Elena Jan 14th, 2003 11:25 AM

Regardless of how Rick sounds or looks, I enjoy his philosophy of touring "thru the back door." He really enjoys the places he goes and the people he meets. I believe he has made many, many friends during his travels in Europe.

I can easily overlook his "nerdiness."

Joe Jan 15th, 2003 06:34 AM

There's a show produced by the PBS station in D.C. (WETA) called Globe Trekkers which is very good. The shows are oriented towards the back packer type of traveller, but are very informatiive and interesting. Check your local PBS station to see if it's on.

xxx Jan 15th, 2003 11:27 AM

Um Joe....pay attention here. Globetrekkers is just Lonely Planet reruns with a new name on a new channel, as already mentioned by several people here.

Go back to work now. And yes, Steves has that gay quality about him.
