I've seen Lonely Planet on PBS more than it has been on Travel Chanel lately. I think the show and Ian are great. The last one I saw was on Alaska - very interesting! The various small towns he visited (including Chicken, Alaska) were fascinating.

Where are we true travelers to turn? The Travel Channel used to be good but now you should only watch if you're planning a trip to Vegas. There's more to life than a casino. I've caught Lonely Planet on the Travel Channel only once. When does PBS run their travel shows? Those who seriously travel need a great travel channel!

Who was the guy who traveled the world with his dog? That was a cool show but I haven't seen it for a long time.

Lonely Planet is the best travel series ever made. Does anyone know if they are doing new segments for the show? I don't get the Travel Channel right now.

The idiot with the dog was the moron Alby Mangles in his bikini pants.<BR><BR>On every episode, he almost got killed. Ended up in the middle of a guerilla war, a rhino charged him, got in a bad car wreck (almost killed his girlfriend and his camerman), and the list goes on and on.

Justine is a whiner, can you imagine traveling with her, all she does is b*tch.<BR><BR>Anyhoo, Lonely Planet is now called Globetrekker and is shown on PBS. haven't seen any new shows, but even the renamed reruns are worth watching. Favorite was Ian in Iran, Blue Mosque, etc...

I stopped watching Travel Channel because, yes, it's always Vegas or Hawaii. It also, quite often, has an MTV Spring Break vibe that just turned me off. <BR><BR>But most of all, the COMMERCIALS. There seemed to be commercials every five minutes. Drove me nuts so now I don't watch it at all anymore.

They were always showing crotch shots of Alby in those nasty little cut off shorts he wore. Yuk.<BR><BR>What about Ian on Lonely Planet always getting plastered? They would show him the next morning all hung over.

Yup, Alby was always wearing those teeny little shorts or a banana sling.<BR>I love Ian because he will try anything once and he is so open to new experiences. <BR>You're right though, he always seems to drink too much of whatever kabungy juice they serve where he is and gets a nasty hangover.<BR>Remember that time he drank the betel juice somewhere and got all giggly, or the time he ate the sheep eyeballs - ewww? The Travel Channel's only recent new show that I was interested in was Peter's Greenberg's show on air disasters. Began to watch but it was too scary. That channel could be so wonderful. What a pity!<BR>

The only time I enjoy the Travel Channel is when I see places I visited. Whatever reason, it has changed. It used to be on my house like the weather channel, as background, but now I don't even put it on anymore, except by accident. Their Alaska Week was good. And Some of the 10 best was interesting. They don't provide shows for people who love to plan travel; I would tune in to them with great frequency if they had real-time data on air, hotel and rental car specials, like some web sites too. Perhaps a 30 minute wrap up show that broadcasts last minute travel, airline price changes, hotel occupancy, etc..... <BR><BR>On another subject, I do not know of any person on any broadcast medium that I would say I think is good or provides accurate, timely and useful information. The guy on NBC does not. The radio shows do not. any favorites?

The Travel Channel was great when it started out. As for Samantha Brown, I find her irritating. She is always jumping up and down and getting into bathtubs with her shoes on. She just annoys me to no end.

I must have be the only person who watched the Best Bathrooms in the World show on the Travel Channel. What a hoot.

kkj, I saw that same show too with the bathrooms. I'm going to China in May and someone told me to check out the gold toilet in Hong Kong. What a hoot! <BR><BR>I also like Ian on the Lonely Planet. What a guy. And I admit, I enjoy Samantha Brown. She's got a great job and has been entertaining. <BR><BR>The travel isn't what it used to be. Where's Rick Steves? Lonely Planet? and other shows that really talked about places and sighte? I guess I'll just have to pick up a travel book and read!

Globetrekker - formerly Lonely Planet plays on public TV. I see it here in Charlotte, NC on Friday nights at 11PM. There was a new show (the credits indicated made in 2002 and I hadn't seen it before) last week hosted by Megan McCormick where she traveled through Indonesia. Quite interesting. I agree, the Travel Channel sucks big time... Tonight's lineup: Millionaire Indulgences followed by Vegas: VIP Homes, then Hollywood Real Estate. Who gives a #@%! about this crap and what does this have to do with travel?
