Is Anything Good Ever On The Travel Channel?

I finally expanded my cable package and had been curious about the Travel Channel. But seems like every other show is about Las Vegas or hotels in Hawaii.

Any really great favorite travel shows on that you can recommend?

Patty Jan 8th, 2003 03:53 PM

I enjoyed the Exotic Island series, but haven't seen it aired recently. The Travel Channel pretty much sucks if you want to see anything other than Vegas. Do you get the Fine Living channel? They have a few interesting travel shows but their programming is limited.

The channels I watch to "travel" the most are PBS, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, The History Channel and BBC America. Never was overly impressed by the Travel Channel.
The Travel Channel is actually advertising for Vegas. My friend who works for the Vegas Convention Center told me that they pay for the "shows" so they are very biased towards Vegas.

Deborah Jan 8th, 2003 04:10 PM

I agree with you John, every time I put on the Travel Show there is a show about Vegas or it's "Vegas Week". I'm sick of it. They did have a good show on New Zealand recently. The repeat a lot.

Sure:

"Behind the Scenes with Beach Bikini Babes at the Top Ten Secret Wild Party Casinos in Las Vegas"

On 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The channel was not too bad to be begin with, but has since fallen into a sleaze war with UPN and the WB. Not sure who's going to win, but certainly not those seriously interested in travel.

Pretty disappointing situation. PBS Travel shows are a WHOLE lot better unless all you're looking for is titillation.

Ken

No.

I love all the haunted hotel & places shows during Halloween.

r-travels Jan 8th, 2003 05:49 PM

I do not have cable, but it seems whenever I am somewhere that I can see the Travel Channel that it's pretty disappointing ... almost an expensive ad than real travel info. Have never viewed anything on it that got me interested in visiting somewhere new, unlike some of the other shows/networks already mentioned here.

Biff Jan 8th, 2003 05:54 PM

That annoying girl that is always on there, whats her name? Boy she makes me turn the channel.

Brad Jan 8th, 2003 10:34 PM

Biff, do you mean Samantha "Boring-As-Hell" Brown? Yes, I AGREE!!

Melissa Jan 8th, 2003 11:34 PM

Yeah that Samantha Brown is always on and she is such a snoozefest. She is always eating something or jumping in an unfilled bathtub. Very irritating.

Shawn Jan 9th, 2003 01:52 AM

Are you talking about the hotel show? That girl drives me crazy - but she has a great job!

danna Jan 9th, 2003 03:58 AM

If they ever play a rerun of "Lonely Planet" watch it. Especially if Ian is the host.

Cindy Jan 9th, 2003 04:13 AM

Hey everybody! I saw last night that Las Vegas week starts AGAIN on Sunday! Are we all going to tune in?!?

christine Jan 9th, 2003 04:36 AM

I happen to love the show, Great Hotels hosted by Samantha Brown. I find her clever and entertaining. I must not be the only one, she is on daily.

ralph Jan 9th, 2003 05:01 AM

I got a confession to make. I got a crush on her! Its a good thing my wife and I travel alot! She says the only tv I watch is The Travel Channel and the Weather Channel. Shes right you know.

Beachbum Jan 9th, 2003 05:07 AM

I second Danna's suggestion. If you see Lonely Planet coming on, make time to watch. The only show I've ever seen on the Travel Channel worth 30 minutes. And Ian is a great host.
Nancy Jan 9th, 2003 05:09 AM

The Travel Channel USED to be fantastic!
Then it (and Discovery too I think) were sold about a year or so ago, and now it totally bites!
You are right - every time you turn it on, it's about Vegas or the Top Ten beach resorts in Mexico. (They aren't even ever really the best, it's whoever pays the Travel Channel the most money.)
We used to watch it all the time, and we finally just gave up.
Lonely Planet with Ian was one of their best shows, and I haven't seen that in months.
They also ruined the Discovery channel and ran Shark Week into the ground. This year it was "Celebrity Shark Week," - puhleeze...

tommy Jan 9th, 2003 06:33 AM

Yes Patty - I just started getting the Fine Living Channel and the first thing I saw was a show about San Juan Island in Washington which was actually pretty good. It seems, however, as the name implies, it won't be offering too many ideas for a budget concious vacation.
