Again, thank you for all of your comments and advice. We went on and made air reservations last night. So, the timeline is defined. We know some of the specifics, but will have to work out the rest.

Week in wine country is too long especially if you are not "into" wines. Would suggest Sonoma side (as many have seemed to here) over the Napa area. Have spent a great deal of time in SF and wine country over the last 25 years. Alternatives to a week (and if you do either Napa or Sonoma try to do other than weekend) would be Muir Woods, Sausalito, Monterrey / Carmel and Big Sur (great aquarium in Monterrey) and the coastline north of SFO.
