Ira Visits St Simons
Hi all,
My Lady Wife and I just spent a pleasant short visit to St Simons, GA (http://www.goldenisles.com/st-simons-island ) We stayed at the Ocean Inn and Suites (http://www.oceaninnsuites.com/ ) which we can recommend very highly. Our suite, no. 304, was in the upper left corner of the building as you face it. Very large room with a king and a double, a couch, 2 desks, mini fridge, microwave, TV a sit-down balcony with 2 chairs, and the usual mod cons. Lovely view of the lighthouse and the water, about 3 blks from the village - $150/nite with covered parking and bkfst. (To be honest, the bkfst is mediocre.) We ate at Mullet Bay (http://mulletbayrestaurant.com/ ), which we describe as “Old Florida” – olde style beach resort. Food and service were both VG. Prices were reasonable. I thought the Fish Tacos were well worth the price. We also had dinner at Halyards (http://www.halyardsrestaurant.com/ ). Don’t be put off by it’s being in a shopping center. It is very, very good. Far superior to most restos on the island. The menu is limited, but as Spencer Tracy once said, “What there is is cherce”. Excellent fish and seafood. The squash ravioli with a sauce of duck confit was top notch. Service was quiet, discreet and very good. Driving home, we took the scenic way up Rte 17, where we came upon a convenience store with a sign that said “Local Honey Inside”. I wanted to check out the local honey, but Roberta said that it wasn’t necessary. ((I)) |
Ahem...I do believe your LW is right about the "local honey". ;)
It looks like a lovely place. Could you tell me how far it is from Atlanta? Thank you for a nice report, BC |
Love that area.
We stopped at St Simons en route to Florida from NYC last December (King and Prince---recommend), and again on the way back to NYC in early spring, when we stayed at both Jekyll Island (Jekyll Island Club) and Sea Island (The Cloister--recommend). The best nearby eating we found was at Southern Soul BBQ, on St. Simons (get there by 6pm to avoid long lines and posibility that menu items will have sold out) and at the fabulous, and fairly divey, B&Js Steaks and Seafood, a bit further north in Darien (well worth the drive and conveniently close to I-95 for anyone passing through). http://bandjssteaksandseafood.com/ http://www.southernsoulbbq.com/ |
A Georgia-native friend of ours took us to The Red Barn on St. Simon's Island a few years ago when we were vacationing on Jekyll Island. We enjoyed the steaks very much.

Ira: Nice report. brings back memories.
Our hidden gem on St.Simon's is the Methodist Camp called Epworth By the Sea. Went to a couple of conferences there, and found it to be an unusually good value. Loved the Island, and especially a great food venue, restaurant and take out, called The Fourth Of May - named for the birthday of all three owners, as I recall. Great home-made food! I don't suppose it is still there. It was in a "downtown" area, but can't remember exactly where! |
We really liked the Jekyll island club even though it rained and we didn't get to play croquet. The Georgia coast has many places I'd like to explore.

My brother and his wife retired to St Simons. It is very attractive and quite low key. It is, of course, mad crazy for golf. Boating and sailing are not as great as New Englanders anticipate when they hear "island" because the water is very shallow.
It is apparently a peculiarity of its location that it does not suffer from hurricanes or severe tropical storms. At least yet. Definitely recommend it and the other Sea Islands. |
Hey BC,
>Could you tell me how far it is from Atlanta?< Yes. Do you wish me to do so? ((I)) |
Hi tac,
Fourth Of May is still there. ((I)) |
Hi BC,
314 mi. |
A friend of mine (from our hometown in Southern Oregon) lives on Jekyll island and loves it - always riding her bike around the nature filled island and dining here and there with her husband/friends - that is - when she's not writing a new novel. :y
|
Sounds very nice!
|
Thank you, Ira. ;)
