Interesting Houston/San Antonio drive?
Heading to Texas next week, flying into Houston and driving to San Antonio.
Any suggestions for routes other than Interstate 10 and/or interesting places to stop along the way? Tks! CanadaKate |
You could take "old" Hwy 90, but I'd stick with I-10. It's really the best and quickest (and pretty much follows 90 anyway).
Weimar and Schulenberg are towns settled by Germans and are fairly interesting - and have some very good smokehouses. If you're in the area at meal time, would recommend Frank's Restaurant (on I-10 in Schulenburg at Hwy 77 exit). A long-time local tradition with very good food. BTW - The drive between Houston and Columbus is flat and boring; hills start from Columbus west to SA and is pretty nice. |
Another option for lunch is in Luling . . at mile marker 630 or so. The City Market in Luling is well known for the BBQ . . pretty basic but really good food. Gonzales is just off of I-10 and is one of the historic towns in Texas . . Lots of older homes Rich |
Schulenburg has some painted churches, besides BBQ.
If you're interested in beer, www.shiner.com Not far from I-10. |
We always just take I-10 since it seems to be the quickest and easiest way. There's a BBQ spot called Hinze's that my husband is nuts about - good brisket and peach cobbler.

rkkwan, I was going to suggest touring the Shiner Brewery myself. (my favorite beer) Nice free tour, wonderful people and samples of their beer. Just south of I-10. Enjoy your visit to Texas!
